Reen's CF emblem filler on Chrome Silver

I received my emblem fillers today. Immediate impression, they're very thin and I'm kind of surprised by the way they look. That's mainly because I haven't held a whole lot of carbon fiber in my hand before.

Installation was marginally difficult. Reen, I think some clarification of your installation instructions would help. I kept trying to wedge one corner in and then the opposite one. That's not the way to do it. Instead, slide the curved part of the insert under the "bun" on the burger. When that's all in, push down and the "patty" part will pop in. 3 of them, no problem. The front lower one, I didn't get both of the corners in as much as I would have liked before I pushed down the patty part. End result is that the corners are a little squished. Luckily, it's the bottom one and even then it's difficult to tell. Once I get the car in the light, I'll take a better look. Which brings me to the next thing, these will be very difficult to remove. Reen, is there any way to make them just a few micrometers smaller? That might make installation and removal a little easier, but then again, they might fall out.

Overall impression - a unique (so far) product, well made and cheap. Installation should take minutes and the end result makes your Z just a little different.

Here's a pic of the parts.

From the back.

The car is Christina, that is to say, dirty.

More pics after a good washing, hopefully this weekend. Or, at least in the sun, which might be about the same time.

Rouxeny: Are you saying that you put the curved part (marked with an X) in first and then pop in the straight part (marked with a Y) second?

reen May 27, 2003 04:46 PM

yes and no...

Bonz-

Yes, as shown in your picture, but just the opposite for the bottom half.

On the top half, the "bun" part is incut, so put it in first. On the bottom half, the "burger" part is incut, so it goes in first in that case.

rouxeny-

I'll take your suggestions to heart. This is the kind of feedback I'm looking for. They look sweet on your CS though!

The sizing is a compromise between ease of installation and making sure they stay put, as you figured. I went through many iterations (CNC cut, so I can just tweak the CAD file a bit) and this worked best. I didn't want to have to use adhesive, both to avoid affecting your paint, and to simplify removal.

The best results I have had with removal entail putting your thumb on the filler and pushing to one side until a small gap opens up at a corner. Then CAREFULLY stick something behind that corner (I prefer a tiny eyeglass flathead screwdriver) and start working it loose.

Hope this is helpful.

Bonz, you are correct. Bun first on the top. I didn't know that you had to do the patty part first on the bottom. That might explain my issues with the front bottom one. Reen, I knew what you meant by "incut" but I couldn't figure out how to make it apply.

What if you made a very very small cutout on one edge, just big enough to slip a small screwdriver under?

Well, if you think about it though, I don't think many people will be putting on and taking off theirs on a frequent basis. I'm sure that if I really really have to take them off, I'll figure out a way. You could always take off the emblems themselves, but it would seem a pain.

You made the right decision to go without adhesive.

Nice product.

Nice job, Andrew. You beat me to this one.;)

I was thinking of getting them but Margie disapproved and since she approved me getting rims, I will accept her opinion.

Maybe when she's sees them at the meet I can change her mind.:D

Dr Bonz May 27, 2003 07:15 PM

What do you mean by "uncut"?

reen May 27, 2003 07:46 PM

incut

incut, re-entrant, overhanging.

In cross section, the emblem is like this:

________
|______/_______|

That's really horrible, but the '/' is the 'incut' part. Opening is larger at the bottom (against the paint) than at the top (the opening).

Kind of hard to explain. Hope this helps.

Bonz, he means there is a bit of an overhang on the eges of the emblem. That beveled edge is where you slip the filler under.

Hey Reen, I emailed you yesterday about the emblem, just wondered if you got it, haven't heard. Kevinb@edgepark.com. Thanks!

Your order's in the works. I've been out of town, but I'm getting back tonight, so you'll hear from me tomorrow (Thurs).

Well, here's one of the front. I took a few pics, but most of them were not worthy of publication.

Reen, do you have any views in particular that you want?

reen May 30, 2003 03:24 PM

right on

Nope, that's perfect.

I just want to be able to show it with all of the different colors.

I'm still missing Redline and Black!

Any picture with the emblem filler on a SS Z??
thanks

rouxeny May 31, 2003 04:35 AM

Yes, Droideka has them on his SS. There's a thread here somewhere.
