Enter for pics of the Vortech's nuclear power.

I took my engine out today...as I expected, the crank sheered in two parts destroying the block. Piston #2 is also destroyed and Rod #1 is slightly bent. No broken rods however, just one bent one.

Here is a pic immediately after opening the oil pan:

These are after me pulling out the carnage to be able to see better:

And here is a pic I took the day it happened:

wow, how much boost? what afr? how long supercharged?

you got me scared with those pics

djamps Oct 31, 2010 02:31 PM

Damn that block basically busted in half... In for more pics when you get it further apart (if you even continue).

Erdem Oct 31, 2010 02:50 PM

wow... what was the final numbers again? 417WHP?

sorry I dont remember

bardabe Oct 31, 2010 02:55 PM

Damn, that sucks.

Cux350z Oct 31, 2010 02:55 PM

wow my old vortech really did some damage!

GL with your new motor build!

ImWeeZzel Oct 31, 2010 03:20 PM

in for story/repair/progress/ potential build/comeback?

GreenGoblin Oct 31, 2010 03:44 PM

You did some nice work there...

zaperroni Oct 31, 2010 03:48 PM

wow, what pulley were you using?

twitch579 Oct 31, 2010 04:55 PM

I think he was pushing 17lbs

mx594 Oct 31, 2010 05:01 PM

How much torque does it take to accomplish that?

GT-ER Oct 31, 2010 05:12 PM

Last time I went to the dyno I put 417whp and 340wtrq on my 5AT. Never finished tuning though cause I ran out of injectors at the moment.

What's interesting to see is that the main bolts are still clamping to the chunk of block that ripped out. I really doubt there is any need for main studs on most FI apps except for maybe very high power applications.

Also, I busted a piston and a crank...yet only one rod is just slightly bent...WTF? I've never broken an engine myself ( one blew a ring land on an engine but that was an easy fix ) so this is my first catastrophe. Not only that, but it's a weird one too.

What do you think the noise was that you heard? Maybe a bent rod?

GT-ER Oct 31, 2010 05:29 PM

I don't see how it could have made a noise, unless the piston was tapping the block at the bottom. But then it makes me wonder why so much destruction yet the rods are "okay" ( by okay I mean not broken, just slightly bent.

Glex25 Oct 31, 2010 05:39 PM

Harmonics directly influenced your crank to shatter.

Remember the pulley is what dampens the harmonics in the crank.
Your crank has been dodgy for awhile according to your other thread.
What happens when a shaft that rotates at high rpms is out of balance?

GT-ER Oct 31, 2010 05:59 PM

But I'm not even sure if the pulley had a problem to begin with. It sheered off, but it could have been because the crank lunged forward when it snapped, smashing though the block and bending upward and the pulley then hit the timing cover and sheered off ( the timing cover broke in pieces down there and has swirls from when the pulley rubbed on it.

Who knows what went first?

That all happened from only 340Tq???? Man im in trouble!

I'm pretty sure the fact that I romped on it 4-5 times a day for 7 months has more to do with it ( All my friends say I'm the reason anything breaks..lol ).I have yet to have a tank of gas last more than 240 miles...lol. It was also the first time I EVER tune a VQ ( no knock sensors to help me out ) and I admit that sometimes ( few times ) I could hear knock, though I would let off and retune it to make it go away.

It was fun while it lasted though...now it going to be more fun...I hope. :icon43:

It sounds like you didnt care if your engine blew, that being said are you going to build another one?

I care, but I'm pretty realistic about modifying a car and adding a Supercharger just to baby the car is not an option for me...I want my money's worth.

Now I'm looking out for another engine to build. I've spent a butt load of money on this car and putting a stock engine back on and selling it is kinda counter productive for me. Plus, no one will give me what it's "worth" to me.
