Pre-boost checklist for higher mileage car?
My Z just hit 100k. I know I need to check compression, but what else needs to be done or services before going single turbo on the stock block? I have never beat on my car and I've always kept up with regular maintenance. Never had any motor or trans issues either. There is a Powerlabs kit in the MP I have been drooling Over for a week now, so even if I don't shoot him an offer in time, I at least want to get the preliminary checkout done. Haven't done a tune up yet either..
Thanks for the help and don't hurt me. :o Torrey |
1. spare $5000- $7500 for when original motor decides it's had enough
2. daily driver 3. clutch 4. fuel upgrades |

phreak i was in your same shoes. After countless hours searching the forum and talking to so many FI owners and of course Bobby@CIN i have made my mind up with Ls swap. Im not begging for huge power but the rareness having a LS swap in my area plus with full bolt ons make great power is all i need. If u think about it money wise and no one knows for sure but
turbo kit 4500-7000 depending on what u want Install plus tune idk 2000 all other mods u need to mak it "safer" just say 3k then again think future wise as in are you gonna be one of the few that has no problems or is your car gonna be a nightmare like most that has to have 1-2-3 engines. Thats prob 10k+ with labor etc. Everyone says u will keep getting addicted to boost so failure is ALWAYS around the corner esp with a high mileage car. Again this is my opinion |

You gotta pay to play. Or trust someone else with your car. I dont.

Save yourself the headache and build it, BUILD IT NAO!
Seriously.... At least pull the motor apart and inspect it (lol). Check the compression, bearings, put in new gaskets, new head bolts... OH WAIT, that's a only a few steps short of just fully rebuilding the damn thing. lolz. Yeah, if you want it to be reliable just rebuild it. Face it, either way in like 50,000 miles your engines going to be tired, might as well do it right the first time. |
Do a Vortech, less stress on the engine. Won't be as fun as a turbo but it will put a smile on your face and always work. Sure you will have some issue but they are mostly minor with a stock block Vortech. I put mine on at 50k over three years ago and just turned 70k. I drive to car hard and I am making over 400 rwhp, this car simply never let's me down. Make sure you get a good tuner. Nothing wrong with boosting a stock block. You have at best a 50/50 chance a failure with a built motor though you will make much more power. There is always a tradeoff......I learned long ago when I strung out one of my Seafood, I had a little 720 cc motor making well north of 100hp and it is fast as hell at only 375lbs. The tradeoff is I have to work on it more than I ride it, not fun.

I'm about to do the HKS and I'm more than likely doing a full gasket kit, new water pump, and oil pump(Going with a Rev up on my DE).

check bank account for additional 10k for when the motor blows. not if but when.

FI is like riding a motorcycle. Its not if you fall (blow up) its when you will fall... We have all kinds of drivers on here with FI, stock block and built, from bat $hit crazy to grandmas dried vagina, in the end they will all blow up. |
Most important check off item would be a new DD! GL

Get a Yaris for your DD...:icon21:
