Engine doesn't rev past 2500RPM
 

I have an '06 350Z. I noticed this on my drive home last night. The engine does not go past 2500 RPM. I basically just bought this thing and wondering what the problem is. Maybe the MAF? It's pretty cold out (-10 celsius, 15-20 Fahrenheit). The guy who sold it to me said it might be the cold air intake that is sucking in much too cold air and is confusing the ECU. Any info would be great!

Sounds like limp mode to me

This can be caused by bad throttle body, or bad throttle position sensor. Common failure from what I've seen on the forums. I assume your SLIP light is on solid as well?

What is Limp mode and how was it turned on by itself. Can I turn it off?

I don't think the SLIP light was on. I'll have to double check when I get home. Any recommendation on how to fix the throttle body?

Serious? Just bought it but it doesn't rev past 2500? I would have returned it then..

MAF sensor (little thing connected with a harness after the air intake) can also be the cause.

Before you go too far in trying to repair something that may, or may not be the root cause, you should try to get the Electronic Computer Module (ECM) codes off your Z. You'll need the Nissan CONSULT diagnostic tool or another OBD II code reader to check them. Limp mode is activated once the ECM gets readings that indicate there could be serious engine problems. Once those problems are accurately diagnosed and solved, limp mode is deactivated.

my friend's intake was loose one time, and so he wasn't able to rev past 3k, try tightening it, if that doesn't work then I don't know =/

Disconnect the battery for a few min and the restart your car. This will take your car out of limp mode. Mine does this about twice a year. Most of the time simply turning it off and restarting it will fix it too.

Check your brake light bulbs/fuses, this worked for me... did you change bulbs?

how would the brake light bulbs/fuses be an issue? I just installed my new rear bumper and when I plugged the brake lights back in I have a similar problem. I didn't notice it til today since today I decided to get on the throttle. But I was driving, I floored it, it picked up til about 3k rpm and then it felt like the throttle was being cut or something. no matter how hard I pressed the gas pedal down it would barely accelerate.

automatic transmission?

IMO, you probably got slush on your CAI which then got to the MAF.

Ditch the CAI. Go with the '06 airbox and get rid of problems like these.

Have you checked your brake lights...and their fuses?

Have you changed the taillight bulbs at any time....to aftermarket LEDs?

Have you altered your brake pedal switch wiring?

Something to check...

Make sure the sensor is plugged into your MAF sensor. I once replaced an intake on my car and forgot to replug the sensor in and it did the same thing. It scared the hell out of me hahaha Also do what the other guy said and disconnect your battery for about 10 min, and that usually clears any issues. If it comes back after it's been reset then there probably is a bigger issue.

This is what I had 5 minutes ago lol. I took it for diagnostics at my boys body shop, it came as good MAF sensor but it will trick the sensor into limp mode which is safe mode basically. So he reset the codes. Clean the MAF sensor and bam it works great. Just take out the battery if u don't have a diagnostics to use. Now my car runs fine. This happened when I installed my jwt po charger. A week later it started so now it works :)

Check your flux capacitaters!! Theirs 6 of them, 1 on each piston, wait....what? JK most likely MAF its happened on my friends Z but check it out with a consult.

Most likely cause...the maf sensor is installed backwards... Yes, the maf sensor is directional. Make sure it is on right.

Other thing to check...make sure the air filter is not wet. The engine can't breathe and made the car go into limp mode.
