VIDEO HOW TO! Valve Cover Gaskets

Hey like I posted on several threads here is the video on how to swap new valve cover gaskets as well as how to seal the grommet of the spark plug tube ( since the grommet I got was 1mm to small on outside diameter, but I wont give up till I find it and give you guys the information.) My pain is your gain :gotowned:

I am sorry the video was shot like crap but It was rather spontaneous and my hands were all dinged up so its not the steadiest of videos but I am sure it will help someone out there.

Also to add, I had the car running for 1 hour ish, and not a single drop of oil in the spark plug tube! :D lets see how long it holds :D

video is up!!!!

The video's a bit long and drawn out but I like how you talk to the audience and share your thoughts/process. Thanks for shooting the video and posting.

Yeah I figured (at 45 min ish). I just wanted to capture the little details that made the job easier for me, so maybe it can save someone else some time! :icon38:

Also UPDATE!

500 miles in and no leak as of today! :D RVT saved the day!

Room Temperature Vulcanizing silicone - but bad ass. Good to see that works

They will trust me. Its a seal. When that gives it will leak again. I just took mine off ajd sent to L fab. Well worth it.

^ UM you do realize that they RTV the seals right they install right? And the factory seals (which they install from another nissan engine) leak over time just as much as the factory ones do.
Also the seal leaks from the outside lip, so if yours is not cracked then you can save yourself the money and do it yourself. Or you can send it to them. I have used RTV on other projects to seal boat engine components (salt water) and that lasts for years.

It means it vulcanises at room temp, not that it's only for that temperature range.

Z33Garage 09-10-2013 06:41 PM

Yeah I know that, I think 2004z is confused lol

Nice that you marked everything and organized it all... I just did changed both my valve covers the other week and just tore everything apart throwing the bolts into a tray and then put it back together, would have been nice to see this video first.

Im interested why you did the idle air, pedal position and throttle valve resets.... all you did was change a seal and paint, if you would have added more air volume via spacer/intake then i can see it.

Interested in any info about that and thanks for the video

You're welcome. The reason why I did the relearn if from what I read, they must be done every time the MAF sensor and the throttlebody are removed, aka disconnected. Yeah I got into the habit of labeling all the bolts on an install that has more than 5-6 bolts, especially if they are similar in length and girth.

mattleegee 09-11-2013 08:05 PM

maybe i will reset mine, but after doing plugs/valve covers it has added all kinds of butt dyno HP so i have been happy

3hree5ive0ero 09-11-2013 09:01 PM

I've taken out and cleaned my MAF sensor and TB out many times without having to ever do the reset procedure. :dunno:

Z33Garage 09-12-2013 02:55 AM

Matt you are prob running rich....I guess you like buying gas ? Lol

The manual says to do the relearn, so I think those mechanics and engeneers prob know more about it than I do :dunno:

Not confused just not rubbing rtv on EVERYTHING and hope it doesnt leak then when it does I say well its all good ill just buy another tube of rtv. I sent mine to Lfab for rebuild for 175$ didn't you try to do what they did amd failed? The seals they use are better than what nissan used. But again im a do it right first time guy. Well I am now 3 Zs later. But anyways video is great for people with less experience.

Also remember there is a procedure of taking bolts out of nissan an a order of tightening

Z33Garage 09-12-2013 04:18 AM

Yeah I would not put rvt on everything like I put nutella on everything lol. I just sealed the seal with rvt that's it. Idk about lfab but r&D uses nissan seals from an undisclosed engine. I doubt lfab created their own seals from scratch but I could be wrong. Yeah the precudure for removing bolts is the opposite of installing em, or at least it is for breaking them loose.

2004Black350z 09-12-2013 04:25 AM

No they use a nissan seal. Also there is a loosening sequence and tightening for R&R of covers.

Thats what I mean, is undisclosed because they dont want to say what nissan engine it came from (understandably), also I believe I make it a point several times in the video to consult back to the VSM for torque specs and bolt tightening order.

I took measurements of my seal so I will soon get some seals and see if they stack up. The one I got was from a VQ35DE from a nissan pathfinder, it missed its mark by 1-2 mm. :(

See Arsenal's thread for what is likely the source for LFAB's seals. Altima valve covers.
