seatbelt buckle won't release

Exactly like the title says. The buckle just won't release. Any ideas? The seatbelt was working fine prior to this. Luckily my passenger was able to get enough slack and wiggle out from under the belts.

You should be able to get a replacement at no charge.

I don't know why it's doing that. I know when your airbags deploy they lock up but obviously you didn't get in a accident so idk why its locked up. But try to do what spike said.

thanks for the replies!

Went out in the morning to mess with it some more and it finally released. Just shook it around a bit. Seems to working fine now... not sure what happened

Look to see down in if anything fell into the release mechanism & causing it to jam. Because of a lack of space to be free internally, it might jam again, if this is the case. Just a thought !!!!

well sh!t it happened again today. While I was the passenger. And I had no slack on the belt so I couldn't wiggle out. Luckily I had my ratchet set. Unluckily it was in the glove box behind the passenger seat. That was not fun. Eventually we managed to just unbolt the bottom mounting bolt. Messed with the latch some more and it eventually released and started working normally again... >.<

Will the dealer really replace the belt/buckle at no charge? If not I was gonna start trying to source a used one.

The factory seat belt system is warranted forever.

So it's been doing this a lot more. Finally called Nissan and seatbelts are only covered by a 10 year warranty.. which expired last year. My local dealership had me try calling corporate to see if they'd cover it since I'm only a couple months out but corporate said they needed an official diagnostic done before they could process my request. The part's only $45 so I said no thanks. Oh well.

So FYI for anyone having belt problems, it's only 10 years. I think it's specified in the manual too.

They told you garbage. You can save the $45 if you are willing to fight for it.

A seat belt repair is a free fix… FOREVER. There is no such thing as a 10 year limit.

I recently had my 20 year-old Montero’s seat mechanism replaced. There was no charge for this service. The belt retraction system was failing.

I'm wrong. The Nissan lifetime warranty for seatbelts does only apply to Nissan cars older than 2003 (2002 and older).

Here is the information:

(I hope the link works on this forum).

Some manufacturers do provide a lifetime warranty on seatbelts
