I have a 2006 350Z and I was driving in rain today and it started to jerk and sputter almost as if it were out of gas. If I push in the clutch, the engine rev's smoothly. As soon as I let the clutch out the RPM's get eratic and wont go above 2000. I limped it to the curb and there it sits. Any help on what it could be or what to check?

The obvious guess would be that something got wet that normally stays dry. Did you drive through any big puddles or standing water?

Chances are if you let it sit for a while, it will dry out on its own and start right up and run normal.

How far do you have to go to limp it home? If it's not too far, I'd say drive it home and let it sit overnight. The ECU does have a limp mode that limits RPM in case of problems and you might be in that state. It runs enough to drive it home or a dealer that way.

 

I live a couple miles away. It was hard getting it to go a few yards. If I reset the ECU will that help? I didnt hit any bad puddles. Just normal rain.

It might help to reset but from what you describe, it doesn't sound like the ECU "limp mode". It leaves the car drivable although not very fast.

Nope. Disconnect the battery then step on the brake for a second.

I assume you're not getting any check engine lights, correct?

 

Nope.. No check engine light. I read somewhere that I need to turn the key on and do a series of timed accelerator pedal pushes?? Whats this your sayin about unplug the battery and hit the brakes?

There are two methods for resetting the ECU. The one you described and the other being the disconnected battery. Normally, you leave the battery disconnected overnight. Supposedly, if you disconnect the batter then step on the brakes, the lights will drain the stored charge from the system and it immediately resets.

 

If you ingested water (hydrolock) you'll likely bend rods, valves, pistons, etc. Your engine will make a lot of noise if it even runs at all.
