Not exactly voluntary then.....

Has this been challenged in court.....I see some significant infringements on ones fourth amendment rights.

One more reason to dislike California and its ridiculous regulations on EVERYTHING.

I saw this in san marcos.. i was wondering what they were doing to this poor little civic, now i know.

Just keep the emissions legal and you won't have any problems.

In the pictures, the ramps look kind of steep, so what if your car is slammed and you can't make it up? Could that get you out of having to smog it on the spot?

I can't find this anywhere in the California Vehicle code laws that suggests the use of a laser, I wonder where IT is getting their info.

Emissions testing requirements and SOPs wouldn't be presented in the CVC. They're located either with the California Air Resources Board (CARB), USEPA, or the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). If you're referring to the infrared beam sensor, that might be on the BAR website.

And according to the BAR Emissions and Maintenance Programs Fact Sheet the roadside inspection was established in 1969 by the CHP:

However, from other readings this was intended to gather data on in-use vehicles for establishing baselines for the smog check limits. This is contradictory to IT's claims of seeing vehicles getting towed but I think that may be an assumption that it was for smog related offenses when it could have been that the driver did not have a valid license or something.

I think one of the more sad items of the CARB is that some of these considerations (such as enforcement and regulations) are not that easy to find - or find out about. BAR's website for "enhanced smog checks" only pertains to dynomometer equipment use for smog checks and not on-road inspections:

And this article (http://www.kcra.com/traffic/21802891/detail.html) claims that the inspections are (1) "voluntary" and (2) inspections only for survey purposes (not citations).

So that long post would be a no answer, LOL!!

I looked on CARB and searched all over the California government websites and found nothing related to the lasers.

Interesting...... well good thing my car is going to be off the road most of the next three years haha.

isn't it illegal to slam the car or even lower the car certain amount?

Well technically everything modifying a stock car is illegal including rims lol. Since it modifies the cars OEM standard for safety, at least thats what the judge told me in the past. They can give you a ticket for being too low, there is an actual measure i just dont remember. They use to bust out a tape measure on me back in the days. What sucks is its also illegal to lift your car or truck past a certain few inches but i never hear of any lifted trucks getting busted.......

so if they can't get your lowered car on the ramp, then they'll just break the sh!t out of your bumper and drive on to the ramp anyways because it's illegal to be lowered..

I think you can't be lower than 22inches from the middle of the headlight to the ground....but I would think a ticket for that would be much less than a modified smog ticket or getting the car towed.
