Target AFR's for a Stock Block (APS TT)

Hey guys, so I just got my AEM UEGO wideband to work with UTI (utec interface) so I can monitor my AFR/RPMS and log them. It also allows me to create a "Target AFR" chart, then it will compare my current fuel map and AFRs, then adjust the fuel to try and to match the "Target AFR" chart that I created.

Just curious if you guys could help me out with what is the most desirable AFRs. I am running a stockblock APS TT setup.

P.S: I have my load columns on my utec set up from 1-10, so basically 10 = 1psi and 100 = 10psi, most boost I hit is 9.5 or so max. I am also running about a 40/60 Meth/Water mixture that sprays @ 5psi.

Thank you for any suggestions.

I just threw this together:

That look almost the same as mine, the only difference is that I have my A/F around 11.8-12 at around 0-2psi... I'm also running meth but I start spraying at 4psi and I have no problem running 11.4-11.6 A/F. I wouldn't trust UTI though coz there is a delay in A/F Data so your matrix will be off. The only way to use UTI is really look at the raw data so you can see how much the delay and compensate from that. I usually look at the TPS, Load, A/F to gauge how much the delay and adjust from that. either way it is still a guess and that is why I just purchased a Tuner:cool:

^ You've said this before - so are you saying that the delay value that you enter for the AFR isn't enough to compensate for the delay?

yap, sometimes it will be spot on but sometimes it will be 5 line delay or a head of it. It really gets annoying sometimes coz I'll see 90% TPS at 10 load column and my A/F will be 13.x, then I'll do another run and I'll see the same spot with 11.7 A/F... This is the reason I use TPS/Load/A.F to estimate how much is the delay, either way it is still a guess and guessing and tuning can be...:icon22:

Hmm...i sure hope that's a fluke for your setup, haha ;) I'll be sure to check the raw logs to see if it's off, and if it's off randomly at times, I may just need to try MPS_logger.

Thanks for the heads up though.

Sometimes I wonder if it is my old laptop that is causing the inconsistency... hope you guys have a better luck with UTI.. I still use it though because I like the Audible feature especially when knock is detected.

Hmmmm so the only way you can tell if the delay is not matched up is by comparing load and afr? What do you have your offset at and where is your sensor mounted? What does the tuner do differently? I wouldn't think it would vary that much on different pulls... Hopefully it was ur laptop. Did you have utec set at 19200?

Thanks for the feedback.

Did auto tune work for you at all?

The delay is a known problem and that is why UTI has an offset you can use. I don't think it is anything on the utec side coz UTI is basically trying to convert data from your Wideband coming from a different port and combining it with the data from Utec. Check your raw data and see if the delay is consistent. You have to read the complete raw logs to really see the transition from ECU to Utec and that will give you a better idea on the delay. I never new about the delay until Gothchick mentioned it...

Never used the Autotune coz I couldn't trust the A/F data...

jining Apr 16, 2008 07:40 PM

hmm i see, so what offset did you use?

I tried all of them and 300ms seem to work the best for me. Go play with it, I try to use the TPS, Load to estimate the delay coz when I'm on full load and let go of the gas, my A/F should lean out but sometimes there will be 10 lines when my TPS is 0% and my A/F is still 11.1:icon11: It is tricky coz once you let go of the gas, it is normal to have a Rich # just after that then it goes to lean coz Fuel is cut.

Unfortunately, not just happening to AthenG. It happens to me too. So now I log and tune from the TXS Tuner raw data dump...

The way I discovered the lag was comparing my UTI Logs to the TXS Logs (I had them logging at the same time). They were always off from each other no matter what offset I used.

I have a Thinkpad T41, 1.6Ghz Pentium M, 2Gb ram, 120Gb HD, 8Hr battery, XP Pro Svs Pk 2, etc... Serial Baud rate is set to 19,200.

I finally gave up on trying to use UTI for tuning. But I do like the UTI Dashboard. If I ever get my Carputer finished, I'll use UTI for the dashboard.

athenG Apr 17, 2008 07:16 AM

/\ Lol my old laptop that I leave in my car is not even close to what you have... So I guess it is not my laptop then. What UTI version you are using? I assume it is the current 2.7 coz I can't seem to make that work (Dashboard Mode) for me even using my Thinkpad X60. I even tried both Serial and USB-Serial:icon20: Can you log IAT with UTI?

gothchick Apr 17, 2008 07:41 AM

Yeah, UTI version 2.7.5.

I haven't tried logging IATs with UTI... For IATs, I use UTEC/Tuner logging or Cipher logging...

I think UTI has the right idea... but it still needs more work to be what I consider "Tuning Quality" software. Especially when your $$$$ motor is on the line being tuned with it.

Sorry for the OT but I emailed Turboxs and they said there is no way to log IAT with Utec and the Tuna.. Well I ask them if there is a way to log IAT and A/F with the tuna and they said no.

Are you sure they said that? Here's a screen shot showing IAT with UTEC.

But yeah, the Tuna Reg only adds AFRs to the total log. Tuna Pro also adds knock amplification.

Yes, you can see it in the Dashboard mode but can you do logging with it?

Well.... I don't think I'd call it "traditional" logging, but TXS does provide a spreadsheet template to track IATs and adjust the tune.

Cipher is probably the better way to go for logging IATs in a "traditional" manner. There's no lag with Cipher trying to insert external data values into a real time UTEC log, because it doesn't even know UTEC is there.

I think that's where UTI is getting hung up, but for logging IATs, UTI should be just fine since IATs don't change that much during a pull...

Of course, the downside to a Cipher log is that it isn't a UTEC/Tuner log. I pretty much just use Cipher to validate my UTEC tune, plus it came with my Orisis ECU Flash.

Man or Girl... you got all your bases covered..lol Not sure if it is worth it for me to get it coz if I add all the cost then I might as well go with Haltech.

gothchick Apr 17, 2008 12:33 PM

Lol. I assure you I'm all girl. I just have a strange hobbie having gotten bit by the mod bug a few boyfriends ago. Then getting screwed over by a local performance shop in Marietta, GA that thought I wouldn't know any better. Now I do all the stuff I can myself, which is most of it. :-)

But yeah, I'm hearing really great things about Haltech. I might need to look into that after we finish my longblock build.
