Thumbs up 350Z at the Runoffs

Here is a link to some pics of the 350Z's in SCCA T2 at the Runoffs. I am headed up tomorrow. I'll try and get some good shots. Good luck TC (PPW), Hal (Yellow) & Scot (Red)! Race is Friday.

Hey All - -

The SCCA National Championships (Runoffs) are happening this week. A
couple 350Z's are entered in Touring 2 (T2). The fastest qualified 6th out of 28 cars - other cars in that class are the Z28, Firebird, M3, S2000, Boxster and Mustang) - I used to race in this class when it was called Showroom Stock GT (SSGT) - the pole is held by a Boxster and second and third are Firebirds, fourth and fifth are Camaros, I used to race against the guy on the pole, Fred Baker, very fast driver - of course when I raced, Boris Said was very strong and has gone onto a great Pro career. Anyhow, you can follow the race scoring live at the following site and the races will be shown on the Speed channel at a later date - have fun - Go Z !

There's a HUGE difference in road racing and autocrossing. S2000's are quicker in the slower speed turns and turnarounds during autocross. In road racing, the Z prevails over the S2000 since raw power plays more of a role in the straights and higher speed manuvers.

I have searched SCCA's website for the rules for the T2 class as well as the various GT classes. Do i have to buy the rule book to find this info? Is it not posted on their site as it is for the Speed World Challenge. Thanks
Michael

Not sure about the SCCA website, but more detailed info on the T2 and GT rules can be found in the General Competition Rules (GCR) and accompanying rulebooks from SCCA. Not sure if they are on-line or only in book form.

In general terms, Touring 2 allows just a bit more mods than straight Showroom Stock. Mandated are full roll cage, race seat, harness and fire system. You can run different shocks in the 350Z (TC had Koni's and another team had over $4000 in custom Penske's), but not springs. The rears can be swapped out and different types of limited slips are being tried. No machining is allowed to the engine/drivetrain, but some racers will try to blueprint anyway.

BTW- make sure to catch the GT2 race on Speedvision and watch the 350Z win it's first National Championship. It was a GREAT race and FULL MARKS to Jim Goughray for a fine drive! Not only was he hit by the pole winning Porsche at the first turn (the 944 flew into the air and retired), the tubeframe 350Z slowly stalked and then passed the factory assisted Toyotas that have won for the past few years. The GT classes allow for some pretty cool mods- anything (just about) goes in those classes! Goughary's car used a sleeved 350Z block (rules allow only a 3.0 liter capacity in an all-out race motor) and the car was well-built for ULTIMATE performance.

Mark- it was a pleasure to meet you down at the Runoffs as well. Sorry we just didn't have more time to chat!

David

Congratulations to all the 350Z drivers at Mid-Ohio!

I don't believe the SCCA GCR is available online, although you get a CD-ROM when you order a printed copy (but you can't print pages from the CD-ROM). There are some general descriptions of the types of cars/modifications allowed for each class on the SCCA web site, however. David is right, T2 is sort-of a cross between showroom stock and IT. GT is mostly tube-chassis cars with different engines/bodies, much like Trans-Am.

Does the Goughary GT-2 350Z use a 350Z engine, or an older VG or L series engine?

David, do you have more details on the basic GT2 rules?

Oh, and for everyone that's interested, a full list of the Valvoline Runoff results are available here: http://www.scca.org/amateur/club_rac...ffs/03results/
