Default Loudness of other cars...

In the apartment complex that I live, one of the maintenance workers drives an sti. I asked him what mods he mad done, and he only installed an aftermarket exhaust. However, his car "rumbles" and growls when he drives it, even when going slow. My z however, even with a dual exhaust, does not rumble or growl when I drive. I have seen many sti's and wrx's, and they all rumble for some reason. Is this just the subaru's that do this? I hope you guys know what im saying. You can hear the rumble of the car from a mile away, while you can only hear my exhaust when I accelerate to higher rpm. Why is that? Maybe because its all single exhausts?

do you still have your stock cats?

also different exhausts naturally sound different which is why there are about a thousand brands out there. also depends on the car.

I would consider the part about "only rumbling when I accelerate to a high rpm" a blessing. That's if you ask me though...

yep, subaru engines make very distinquishable sounds, and will be loud with little effort.

my buddy has an 06 rex that he's about to throw a catback/down pipe/uppipe on. it's going to sound lovely. very quiet when it's in stock form though.. cant hear it at all, even when he guns it.

you can make your Z as loud or as quiet as you want it to be, but it's not going to sound like a subaru.

Yes I still have stock cats. I know removing the stock cats will make my car louder, but not growl or rumble like an sti. I guess it is the engine then.

LOL yea i guess. I just wanted to my car sound loud and rumble even when I drive slowly, not just when I exceed 3-4 rpm.

They all sound that way because of the motor.

there are only a small handful of cars I can identify by sound only, wrx/stis and the like are the easiest to identify via sound for sure.

Your 350z will never have that rumble. You are comparing the sound of a v6 and a flat 4 cylinder turbo.

You could however install a motordyne dual shockwave exhaust and be loud if thats what you want.

Hmm I c then. I know I can make it really loud: single exhaust, test pipe, headers. But I wanted more growl than just plain loudness. Im assuming that can only be achieved in a subaru.

You need Topspeed exhaust lol, ugh trust me it isn't always nice to have the sound of madness surrounding you making your head want to explode... especially if you have a date.

None the less I know exactly the sound of the Subi you are talking about like mentioned above, all that noise comes from the boxer engine... it's a sweet sound forsure.

yea seriously. I can identify an sti from a mile away. That sucks that my z will never growl or rumble. Obviously I chose my z over the sti, and I like the z's looks a lot better, but I just wanted a little more rumble to my car, but you guys say it can't be attained.

LOL yes i could get a topspeed or motordyne exhaust, but Im not looking for just straight up loudness.

Its the boxer engine in the subys that makes that burble. Its a hit or miss sound. I like it, others hate it, but I'd prefer the Z's sweet, clean sound any day. Also be aware that loud exhausts at low rpms SERIOUSLY get annoying. If its a DD, i'd say its a make it or break it thing.

i love the suby boxer engine sound, it jus sounds mean and it rumbles sick. i dont think any car can make this noise but i had a S14 240 wit a 3inch DP and 3inch TP and the one piece Apexi 3inch exhaust all the way and i came pretty damn close to replicating that sound. i love it! the Z will never sound that way.. but i love the Zs noise..

Indead the boxer engine and probally the fact of it being such a low compression. I dont like it. Sounds little like a cross between a muscle car and a rice burner. Now the vq sounds like an angels humm... even the Infinity FX35s sound sweet.

well now i can attest from experience. my last car was an 06 STi and the nature of the boxer engine, even with the stock STi exhaust, is very loud at 1500 rpm. personally i think it is one of the loudest points in the rev band. its just how they are. i mean we could go into this huge talk about why different engines sound different due to number of cylinders, placement of the cylinders, ect. but it would take too long to fully explain. basically, different types of engines sound different due to the way they move the air thru it. this leads to accoustic differences and blah blah. you get the picture. im sure a google search will give you the fully explained answer. oh and subie exhaust note ftw. i loved mine. but my z still sounds amazing too

I miss my RX7, BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAP! And that was just with a Stage to Street Port. Happy I got my Z though, because getting a new engine once a year was getting old after 3 years!

Also, had a Skyline GTS-t that had a pretty sweet sound. Running 4 inch turbo back exhaust made it sound the sexy. Infamousbkny at the tube of you to check it out.

All in all, I love the sound of my Z above them. 2.5 inch test pipes and custom 2.25 inch dual. Not to loud, not to soft, just right for what I like.

BOXER motor, though boxster's have the same engine platform...though the subaru rumble noice is mainly from the un-equal length header design...

Porsches's have the same layout and you don't hear them rumble..all in the headers.

I owned two subies for a while and was never a fan of the rumble, sound like it was low in compression or something like a tug boat...EL headers solved the issue!
