Do We Really Want One of the First Off the Line?
While I know all of us are excited about getting our Z's, do we really want one of the first batch of cars off the line? I wonder whether the quality will be better 2 or 3,000 into the production run. OR, could it potentially be better to get an early model because they'll be running things slower and doing more in depth quality checks..... Hmmmm, what do you all think?
BTW, I have a '99 Acura 3.2TL that was built within the first month or so and it quality hasn't been too great. Lots of rattles, squeaks, etc....

I was just thinking about that today. Funny you mention your Acura. I have a '94 Integra which the original owner bought in late '93. (1994 model was the first year of the 3rd generation Integra. Granted it wasn't a brand-new design like the Z.) I bought it in '96 with 28K miles, and it's been absolutely great. Squeaks and rattles are cropping up now that it's getting old (could have to do with low profile tires and new coil-overs), but no major mechanical or electrical problems. And I don't baby it.
I hope the early production Z's are as good or better.

now if that makes sense

- by the time the first shipment gets here the third shipment (to be delivered in october) should already be in production. you figure if they're starting production in june and expected arrival is august, that's two months difference in time. the second shipment (september delivery) will be produced in july and the third shipment (october delivery) will be produced in august.

I'm still unclear as to what criteria is used to determine the build sequence. In any case, one of the Nissan insiders said that fewer cars would be produced during the first month so that extra levels of quality control could be applied to the initial lot. I'm sure they will also run off a small batch of press and promotional cars before the customer cars. Hopefully those will catch any major glitches on the assembly line.
Yeah, i'm agreeing with TCL, I think that the first few they make will catch everything glitch or poor quality wise. Also with a car like this, it will be awesome to be one of the first around your town to be in one.
I believe that the first cars in some ways may be the best. One of the best sales tools any business has is word of mouth. Can you imagine what we would be saying if the first cars off the line were lemons. Can you imagine what would happen to the plans Nissan has for its premo attraction for the dealerships? I for one am not going to be losing any sleep over quality control. I will be losing sleep in anticipation.

I am with Archduke on this one. Have no fear regarding quality. I would take the first one off the line..... RIGHT NOW ! Anyway, I don't sleep too much anyway. So no worries there. The wait is sooo long.

not worried at all about rattles and squeaks and such
what i'm worried about is like the computer chips and stuff in the car. usually those things have bugs (not literally...like problems...you know...k...yeah...) in them that need to be taken out and nissan won't really know bout these until people start complaining about them.
these people complaining about them happen to be the first batch people :/

I agree. while it would be advantagous for a company to start with a high quality product so the word of mouth would be positive, how often does this not happen? in fact it is a rarity that someone would produce a quality product that they would stand behind.(me synical...naw) I believe most of the problems that will come up would be invisable upon inspection. BUT I'd still take on of the frist cars anyway. (come on 7)
Initial software problems in the engine computer shouldn't be much to worry about, as it should be easy for the dealer to give you an update (at little cost to Nissan). I don't know this for a fact, just guessing, but it seems they should make it easy to reprogram, either electronically or at worst by replacing a chip.
But I'm betting on Nissan getting it sorted out the first time!

I think if you get the first one off the line, the car will be better due to strict inspection. Nissan wants to make sure there is absolutely no problem when they ship the car, since all have great expectation on this car. But there will always be a little margin of error here and there. Hopefully it's not too much.
Don't worry, we have 3yr/36,000mi warranty, that's what it's for.

I'm in agreement with rainmanZ and archduke.....I will take any car that comes whenever it comes...my current 90 300zx was produced in august 89 and it has been and continues to be a great car..I will miss it when I get rid of it...don't know if I will trade it in or sell it outright.
Hey goofyZ,
No firm dates yet, but prolly Feb/March ... another 8 months to go - hope I can make it
Still, I'm getting by with my Red S15 [turbo back 3" exhaust, unichip] so daily driving is great fun
Cheers,
NevB

We are all guinea pigs but that's the price we are paying to have the newest toy from Nissan. Face it, we are just Beta testers. I have heard that Japanese cars get higher initial quality ratings than domestics because they release most models in Japan first and use the first owners' problems to refine the design/QC. The Z will be released here and in Japan at roughly the same time so we don't get that luxury. Am I worried? No, the car will be under warranty and I like solving problems and enjoy working on cars.
