Removing factory gear knob
I was trying to change out the factory **** the other day, and when twisting, it just wouldn't loosen up. I didn't want to force it, but noticed two notches in the side of the stick. Wondering if anybody can give me the tip to sort this out.
Thanks.
Thanks.
you can't just twist the **** off. at least with the earlier models (like mine). they are on there very tight and just trying to twist the **** can break the entire shifter and possibly damage the tranny. i know...i broke my shifter and had to boot leg it back together (it included the use of a soft mallet so you know it couldn't be good). there are a bunch of threads with instructions posted...try a search, and they are also in the service manual.
You absolutely need to have the following materials:
1 pair of channel locks
1 pair of medium or large vice-grips
2 pieces of rubber tubing (radiator type)
After you get the boot assembly loose (make sure you disconnect the ribbon cable for the climate controls, too), you need to put one piece of radiator hose around the shifter shaft, and then clamp the vice-grips down on the tubing as tight as you possibly can get it (this will help prevent the shaft from turning in the tubing). Then, take the other piece of tubing and put it around the base of the shift ****. Use the channel locks to turn the shift **** counter-clockwise as hard as you can while using the vice-grips to provide counter pressure (i.e. you do NOT want your counter-clockwise pressure to be exerted on the shift mount.) After you make the first 1/4 of a turn or so, you'll be able to use your hand to turn the **** the rest of the way off. Be prepared that the boot is going to get in the way and want to turn with the ****. Be careful not to rip the top of the boot when you're doing this. Good luck!

Why don't people do a search....
