Default The infamous 3rd gear grind

ok everyone, do not flame me i did my search i see alot of threads on the 3rd gear grind. well now my car at 54k miles its happening... when it first started happening i was racing an eclipse and he thought it was an BOV lol. anyways, i bought the car used from power nissan at 50k miles, had it for 2 months and having problems ever since....

Problem.

1.AC fan belt ripped off
2.when i roll windows up it rolls back down by it self!
3.3rd gear grinds and now i have to skip 3rd and go to 4th.....

Anyways anyone know how long it takes for the dealer to put the new tranny in? would it be covered under warranty still? i cant go for a couple days without my z

thanks!

He's right on the 60k powertrain.

The windows are not adjusted, they are going up too high... and hitting. It's the sensors just thinking something is in the window. You can adjust this via the service manual.

As for going without it... sure you can, you did fine for years before.

When you say "grind", what do you mean? Does it make a grinding noise or is it just hard to get into that gear? I noticed on my car, sometimes it is hard to get into 3rd gear or 2nd even though my clutch is pressed all the way in. No noises though, any thoughts?

It makes a nasty grinding noise... i took it to tustin nissan this morning and the guy drove my car with me in it, it grinded again. so at the end of the drive he said he will give me a new clutch and new tranny. he said it takes 4 days to get in and the install takes 1 day

Oh i see. Hmm.. I wonder why it is hard for me to shift into gear sometimes. Happy to hear that you're getting new parts in a quick time frame.

For those of you who are griding 3rd, Im curious as to how you are driving. I find the Zs gearbox very easy to get accustomed to. When you guys get the grind, is it when you are shifting fast (clutching and shifting almost simultaneously) or when you shift with the clutch fully depressed? When I drive normally and shift, I always release the clutch after I am certain it is in gear. Ive only grinded 3rd 2 times and that was due to my error.

mine only grind once in a while when it's cold.. once it's warmed, it's okay... hard to troubleshoot at the dealership.. so no warranty yet.. but thank god for 60k powertrain warranty!

Mantis3024,

I have the same symtpons as others. My is an '04 with built day Feb. Here is how it goes on my.

When I shift a little fast from 2nd to 3rd, it would grind (teeth hitting sound), but not always. But when I shift from 2nd to 3rd (take a second pause at netural), it would be fine.

I have driven stick for 14years and this is my 4th manual cars.

I took into the dealers at 3k mile and they say its still a new transmission and wait for it to break in (BS). I don't even want to bother with dealers until it breaks.

Can someone confirm its 60k miles? How many years then, 5years?

Btw, in the morning when its cold, i sometimes have a hard time getting into 2nd. After a few blocks, then its normal.

Tony

Why do these trannies suck so much?? I mean, wouldnt Nissan figure out after they have replaced so many that they obviously cant make a good damn tranny to go in the Z. They should scrap it and go talk to Getrag.

I find it's hard to go into the first 3 gears if it's cold.

During cold weather, does it ever go away when your car warms up or is it always there? I bought my car in the winter and haven't actually experienced it in warm weather yet. So I don't know if my difficulty in shifting in gears 1-3 is due to the cold weather or other stuff.

I had the same problem with my windows. It needed to have the power control module for the windows re-set. This was done under warranty. They've been fine ever since. I believe "Road & Track" magazine had the same problem with their longterm test 350z.

lol, man I bought mine less than a month ago. I always let it sit and warm up to full operating temp, usually by the time i get out of my neighborhood it's doing fine.
