Default Strange whine when easing out the clutch?!? Anyone?

Now that the weather's getting better in Toronto, I've been driving with the windows down and now I notice a really strange noise...

When easing out the clutch, say in first or reverse, and the car starts to move (e.g. clutch is starting to catch) I'm hearing this whining noise... sortof like when you rub too metal pieces together... not a grind, but rather a rattling/whining noise. It seems to be coming from the middle of the car.

It's really gentle and you can only hear it when there's a wall or guard rail next to the car and the sound echoes back into the cabin. At first I thought it was the axle clicking noise, but I noticed that it happens when easing out the clutch in reverse too...

Does anyone have any ideas?

BTW, I have an '03 with a build date of 10/02 and this is (suprisingly) the first transmission problem I've noticed. I have the "normal" cement mixer sound and a notchy feeling going from 1st to 2nd, but other than that the tranny's been good to me. But now this is happening

Does it sound like a couple of rocks being shaken in a tin can? Random noise or does it have a rythm?

i have the rocks in a tin can sound since day one when the clutch is out and I'm parked next to a wall... from what I've read, this is "normal" (???)

Anyway the noise i'm talking about here is not really random... I can reproduce it consistantly. Like I said, it sounds like two pieces of metal grinding against each other and it only happens when the clutch is almost fully engaged. I notice it only when easing out of 1st or reverse and it only lasts a second or two just as the clutch finishes slipping and the car starts to move.

Any ideas?
