Default Disappointed in the 350z

I have a few friends with 350z's and being the passenger seat is a whole lot different in the drivers seat. I just recently bought a brand new 2005 6spd 350z and am not too impressed with the power. It barely spins in 1st gear, which is good, cause when i had the cobra i wouldnt even have a 1st gear, but other then that, it doesnt feel quick. Maybe a turbo kit will help boost the power a little, but stock, i was VERY disappointed. Maybe im asking too much out of it, cause my cobra did make close to 500whp, so i really cant compare. To back things off, i want to introduce myself, i am a new Z owner. Other then the power, everything else such as handling is superior over the cobra. I totaled my cobra about a month ago cause some jacka** cut me off. Long story short, i went into a wall going about 60mph. I came out with not even a scratch and was greatful i came out alive. Here is the link to the wreck and some pics: http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...=164707&page=1
Anyways, glad i am now a Z member and plan on getting some 19" Axis seven mod Black very soon.

Why did you buy a Z? Why didn't you just buy another Cobra or buy a new GT. They look hot and go like stink.

I too came from a Mustang. Had all kinds of money in it. Once I realized that no matter how much I spent on it I could not get it to handle the way I wanted, I bought a 350z. But that's my reason and I am happy as hog in s-h-i-t.

If you're conerned with the feeling that massive amounts of torque give you and gnarly straight line runs, the 350z isn't going to satisfy someone coming from a 500hp Cobra! Although it will satisfy most.

Still, yeah, with a twin turbo kit or super charger your Z will not only eat 95% of the cars on the road in the twisties but also in a straight line.

How are the Twin kits for this car? My friend had an rsx-s and put on a cybernation stage 1 turbo kit and ran into more problems then i would want to deal with. I may just get a s/c and call it a day. Turbos seem to be more maintenance then s/c, but then again i dont know much about the Z, so inform me. I would like to find a reliable kit, easy to install within a day or two, and a kit i know i wouldnt have to take back to the shop everytime i decide to do a WOT run.

Sorry to hear about your wreck, glad you are OK. Coming from the Cobra, I doubt you will ever feel the Z has enough power, short of dumping 15-20k into the motor.

The Z is a sports car not a pony car. You'll learn to love the difference.
I've had Mustangs too. This is more fun. Enjoy!

As far as plug and play, APS Twins seem to be the way to go as they come preprogrammed and it is the most complete turbo setup for the Z. The kit was made for a stock Z. If you do a search youll see that this has been covered thoroughly. On a stock Z expect to dyno around 400 or more at the wheels. Many people have had problems with the Greddy Twins, but its prolly mostly due to tuning. Any higher than 450 at the wheels and youll have to go forged internals or at least it seems that way. I believe GRD in IL have a stock 350 boosting around 12psi at 500 whp and dont have any problems yet at all. APS so far has the record for no blown engines. Keep an eye out bc they are also coming out with a single turbo in the next few months... This topic has been covered to death and you can learn so much more than I can say from the search function, however if you do have any questions dont hesitate.

I was never a big fan of superchargers for my own reasons, but lots have had success with Vortech. I'm sure others can shed more light on them.

come up to dallas and get FI from grubbs infiniti... I know they are authorized vortech dealers so I think you get a warranty. I also hear they let you borrow a g35c while your car is getting worked on.

You can't compare a superchaged v8 to a n/a v6 when it comes to acceleration but around turns the 350 will tear the cobra up. Before I got my Z, I was very close to settling on an 04 cobra. The thing I couldn't stand was the 50lb clutch. I don't know how people drive those everyday through traffic. When I got my Z, I wasn't very satisfied. Over time, you'll learn to appreciate it more.

Yeah the clutch is a lot lighter and easier to drive in traffic. But having the cobra, that never really bothered me. I really wanted to get another cobra after i wrecked mine, but the rents just didnt want to cosign for another cobra. The only option they gave me was a 350z or an Srt-4. I know a lot about Srt-4's cause i know like 20 people with them, but I just like the look of the 350z better. Its more classier, cruiser, and all around performer. Plus i got to have that RWD again. I had doubts on my mind when i went to the dealership, but after purchasing the car and having a chance to drive it, i definitely have more respect for them. Like i said on my post above, I want to get Axis Seven Mod (black) wheels, but will probably go for the 19's. From what i hear the offset for the 19's arent matched for the 350z, so i may need spacers. What size spacers do ya'll recommend? And what tires and sizes will be good with those rims? Thanks a lot!

AFAIK the 19s work fine without spacers. JAG here has them and he had the wheels before the car even came in (back in Sept 2002). Offsets are fine on his.

The Z feels slower than my Stage 2 WRX was, but its such a better package overall. If straight-line power is what you want, then the Z was the wrong choice unless you want to modify it. I used to have a 2000 Z28 6-speed before the WRX and sometime I really miss the raw power and the screaming LS1 thru the Borla exhaust I had.... but alas, that car handled like crap and the build quality was laughable. Loving the Z so far.

In regards to the turbo, no matter what car you put FI on, your gonna have to work on it and deal with problems and stuff breaking. Its just the nature of having a LOT of hp on a turbo. IMO, i would not turbo this car if it was my daily driver, its just not practical at all and you will run into problems.

Welcome THO!

I guess I don't understand. You had every opportunity to drive several other Z's before purchasing one, but you didn't, and now you're disappointed that it has no power? Interesting. Would you still have bought the car had you known of the lack of power in comparison to your Mustang?

Anyway, glad you're ok after the accident in the 'stang.

I recently had an opportunity to drive an APS TT powered car, and I can tell you first hand that twins transform this car into a whole different animal. If you have the means, I highly recommend F/I of some sort. It makes the car so much more fun to drive! Good luck!

How does the Z compare to the evos and sti's from a roll? A friend of mine raced an evo in his 350z and beat it, but when he ran the sti, the sti pulled him slowly. So whats the verdict? Does it come down to driver?
