Default Stock tire pressure @ 35 PSI.

Why do you guys think Nissan set the stock tire pressure @ 35 PSI. After all, the older generation Z's were speced out @ around 28 PSI. Don't you think a lower (maybe 28 PSI) pressure would solve the traction problem and improve the already awsome road grip? If there is a good reason I just don't understand what it might be. Side wall roll over while road course type driving maybe?

I was thinking that as well, but I'm not sure why. On a side note the dealership gave me my car, from the lot, with 48 psi on all four tires!??!

I've had the same "extreme pressure" experience with tire mounting for both cars and motorcycles (unless I do it myself). I've learned to always check as soon as possible so I don't drive w/tires at 50 psi too long!

could the tire pressure have some effect on the feathering?

I keep my tires at 35psi cold which turns to 44psi when the tires are hot...and 30psi cold in the dead of winter. This works for me since the TPS buzzer anoys me if it goes off every morning when i get in the car in the winter.

My TPS sensor has been going off every single day since I got my Z, up until today.

Spring finally came to the region and it's a sunny 70 degrees outside and me Z likes it muchly!

I'm sure the older Z tires were not rated at 35 PSI cold. Seems like a more modern, high-perf. type of pressure.

I too keep mine at 35 cold. This gives me about 41-42 in the cool weather, and 44 or so in Summer. You have to adjust them twice a year for Winter and Summer.

my first Z here, but i would think that it would have something to do with the size of the tire. I am guessing these Z's are running wider and bigger OEM tires. and from what i understand the bigger the tire the bigger the cold PSI.

when i went to 19's the tire dealer recommended that the cold PSI be around 40 or so. after playing around with some pressures around there i found that the car handled the best with the 19's at 40 cold.

i dont know this for sure but thats my best guess.

The only trouble is how hard it rides @35psi. Before going out on a date I usually drop it down to 30psi for boulevard cruising...hope that's not exacerbating the feathering.

Under inflating will definitely wear the outer edges faster.

I run 35 cold and have never seen it climb to 40, even when driving the twisties with my Z club, and that is some spirited driving! have seen them drop to 30 in the winter though.

Nah, that sounds pretty lame to me. Decent theory but a bit of overkill. Won't help the feathering, will it? tehetehete

I just installed a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires for my '04 ZR. My installer, whose shop specializes in foreign cars, urged me to keep all four tires inflated to 35 psi. He explained that if my car tended toward feathering, the 35 psi would help keep the wear in the center of the tire rather than the interior sides.

Nissan had also suggested 35 psi on my OEM Potenzas when they realigned and unmounted/remounted the front tires side to side.

I am convinced that the 35 psi is directly related to the feathering phenomenon. The ride is a bit harsher, but I can certainly accept that in lieu of replacing tires every 12K or so at a cost of $1K.

I've had the feathering every 6000 miles and I check my pressure on the display daily - I always run 35 psi cold. So I don't think that has anything to do with the f-word.
