Where did the X go in ZX? Why was it dropped for the 350z?

Well that's the public version of why they call it the Fairlady Z. But little beknownst... the real reason was to appease Mr. K's love affair with his mistress so she would not expose their secret relationship. He promised her to name his best/highest race car line after her so the world would secretly pay honor and respects not only to his creation but to her as well... hense "Fairlady Z" came into existance. To this day only a handful of people know her full name but it is fairly easy to assume it began with a Z.
So that's it kids. keep it on the "lo lo". This is a national secret afterall for Japan and Nissan itself.

In addition to Fairlady, Don't forget that the "Z" in the name was inspired from a Z-shaped flag from a Japanese WWII battle ship...if I can recall, it stands for something along the lines of "don't give up" or "give it your all" or something inspirational like that and hence the original design team of the Z thought this would apply to the first Z since Nissan did not originally support 100% the idea of building a 2-door sports car. After hard nights of work and disproval from Nissan factory (which at the time was more focused on their commercial vehicles and family car divisions) the original "Z" design team finally convinced Nissan that the sleek design would be a good seller (and it was) and hence the meaning of the "Z" when applied to the car was deemed appropriate given it's difficult start but worthwhile result.

And making an announcement for a local meet is? Oh well though, just more threads over the same topic wasting bandwidth and server space.

Personally, I'm not a fan of naming cars after chick flicks. If Katsuji Kawamata waited a few years, he could have named the Fairlady a:

1. Fried Green Tomatoes Z
2. Joy Luck Club Z
3. How to Make an American Quilt Z
4. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Z
5. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood Z

Makes the whole concept of naming a car after My Fair Lady a bit vaginatastic.
