The problem with the Pioneer AVIC is that the nav disc has to be in the unit to operate to its full potential......otherwise, not all functions will work. That is the beauty of the factory nav is that the DVD is separate and operates independently from the rest of the stereo. Now, there are aftermarket systems that do this also and I would highly recommend these types of navigation units. The pioneer tries to put too much into one package instead of having the DVD connected remotely. Alpine has an excellent system and also has a separate touch screen which can be mounted just like the factory NAV, but have many more options. If I could, I would sell my factory NAV and to this.....too much of a pain in the a$$ to remove from the car. do your research and actually try the systems out at the stores. You'll soon see what I am talking about.

As far as the laptop thing goes.....don't do it. If you want NAV in your car, get a NAV system. I tried the laptop thing ONCE and it was a pain in the azz. Too hard to type things in, to see, to setup.....and many many other inconveniences.

Plus you got to plan on securing the laptop. Unexpected road conditions means another 1.2G's on a laptop as it crashes to the front of the footwell on the passenger side.
