If you're talking about an MT, you'll want to clamp down the shifter rod (underneath the shift boot) before twisting off the ****. If you have an '04 or newer 350Z, supposedly the **** is a lot easier to remove than with the '03's (mine was on TIGHT ).

Vice grips on the shifter rod, vice grips (with many layers of towels) on the squarish bottom part of the shifter. Righty-Tighty, Lefty-Loosey. Got mine off with no marks.

can use radiator tubing to protect shifter; strap wrench is great for turning ****.

Mine had red loktite (!!!), and it was nearly impossible to get off. So I got my brother to do it. He broke the shifter at the anti-noise joint, drilled a hole in it, mounted it in a lathe, and broke the **** loose using a pliers grabbing onto a belt wrapped around a towel. (It's a home-made strap-wrench I think.) Then he re-threaded it to get rid of the extra loktite.
