Automatic or Manual???
I have driven both -- I had a 5AT as a loaner for a long while -- the 6spd is the way to go. Totally different car IMHO. I will probably get flamed by the 5AT guys -- but the 6 spd sooo much better!!!!! The manual shift mode pails in comparision to the feel of the stick (but the new 2005 one is way better as it has rev-matched downshifting). All that said -- I am a track junkie and the Z is my toy, not my daily driver.
But try this -- girls that drive stick are super sexy (that is how you sell it to your wife).

In a nutshell, VDC will attempt to correct your Z if it senses your Z is doing funny things (like going sideways). If your rear wheels begin to slip TCS (VDC also) will try and reduce engine power/apply brakes to stop the wheel spin, but TCS will not do much if you start doing 360’s and doing Sideway Sam stuff.
Again, 6MT only gets VDC, so you can convince your wife why manual is safer (Just a hint).

But all in all, you'll find that AT's have a price premium over MT's (my first car was a Civic AT and it cost me $1.5K more than the MT... and we're talking about a barebones car
).(looks like Charlie beat me on this one)

MT's are probably more rare for the Touring (whether it's b/c of the actual production work or b/c there are less made, which might translate to premium pricing for those wanting luxury, yet a non-luxurious drivetrain, that being the MT). The stock wheels on the AT Touring make a difference as well.*

Oh and edmunds.com says the same thing.

So your just wrong, sorry.
And ya thanks yobri for understanding my point.
I really thought I preferred the 6MT, but found a good deal on a 5AT touring with nav and aero pkg. So I thought I made one compromise but got a alot of extras I thought I couldn't get.
I honestly think I'm still 50/50 about the manual. I think if the 5AT was a standard/old style auto I'd definitely say go 6MT, but the autostick/tiptronic helps with the manual style shifting when you want it and you can leave it in full auto when you're in heavy traffic. There is a slight delay in shifting at times, but you don't have to worry about the clutch either. I find driving the auto almost as fun but slightly more versatile than the mt. Additionally the 5AT is just as fast as the 6MT. Numbers on the board indicate it all comes down to driver ability.
I wouldn't have had these opinions earlier. If I had special ordered the car vice buy it new, I would have ordered it with stick only because that's what I had in my mind to get. I enjoy driving both versions. I don't know if that helps you or not.

I'll give you some perspective. My wife rarely drives any car I have but has to once in a while. But since I bought the 6MT Z, she never wants to drive it. She can drive an MT really well but she doesn't want the hassle. But I bought an AT Jeep Wrangler just so she could drive it once in a while. I hated the Jeep because it didn't feel like a Jeep with an AT. I sold it 6 months after buying it. She might have driven the Jeep 3 times in that 6 months.
The thought actually ran through my head again today. For some INSANE reason I was thinking of trading my 2 month old Z on a ZR. I didn't even consider a ZR when looking for my Z because I absolutely can't stand the way they look with the top up. But I considered for half a second if the ZR should be an AT. I don't think it would feel like I was driving a sports car if I got an AT. But then again, I probably won't get the ZR anyway.

Just got my 6MT and love it...brings back all the fun to driving....
We got my wife a new Mazda3 hatch with the "manumatic"...she
never touches the "+/-", but loves the car. I drive it often, but
seldom use the "+/-" shifting, it just does't compare to a manual.
As a straight automatic tho, it is great, as I'm sure the Z AT is.
So for me, I "guide" the Mazda3, I "drive" my Z 6MT
ps: I think the Touring AT is less than the 6MT because it
doesn't have $$$$ worth of VDC...

I just got a new performance Z with the 6MT, my last Z was an enthusiast auto...I love the 6MT and it is my daily driver. Just the feeling of all that extra power is worth it. Oh and my daily drive to work is 20 miles down world famous Victory drive...ok, picture Atlanta traffic but only two lanes, yikes, but I am lucky enough to have a traffic companion in the form of an M3 that has the same schedule as me...makes those morning drives quite entertaining
if you and your wife are getting the z for the fun factor, i'd suggest the 6mt, it's my daily driver, and i love it, even when in traffic - but i love to drive... i could see the benefits in getting a 5at, but i just dont think it would be as fun.
