Angry Ac Nasty Smell !?!?

Every time I turn off the AC, I get a nasty smell out off the vents…The smell is so bad that I have to open both windows for 5 min…If I drive the car with the AC on in the evening, the smell will come-up the next morning if I turn the AC off…
You may occasionally get some bad odors while switching the AC on and off but that smell is far stronger…
What can I do to take care off that issue? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Loïc

Nissan should have an aerosol to get rid of this. It's mildew in the vents.

Have it checked out. Then, when you use the AC, make sure you let the fan run for some time after you stop the compressor, to dry the system.

It should never return.

Loic ? Frenchy ? Are you french ? Salut !

Sometimes you can kill the mildew by blasting dry heat (A/C with heater) for a long time.

If the smell lingers, Ozium is a pretty good product to neutralize the odor. For 1-2 days it will smell like "ozium" but after that, the smell will disappear altogether. It's sorta like Febreze on crack.

Nissan dealer told me your vents will grow mildew in them if you selectivly do not let any outside air in and just have the recirculation option selected, he said if i used the outside air option hte most i woudlnt have the problem.

So far i have not noticed a really nasty smell, but then again i only had hte car 350 miles hehe

Mine does it too. Smells pretty crappy sometimes. It seems to be lessened like iheartZ said if you shut off the AC a little while before shutting off the car. Other than that, it seems to be a normal occurance.

The smelly sock smell will eventually go away on it's own. Both my 03' and 04' Z's and Murano and Mitsu Eclipse had this smell brand new off the lot when the air had been running for awhile then shut off, which would of course not be due to mold in the vents.

Mold would need quite abit of consistant moisture to grow, the A/C Compressor removes most of the moisture from the OUTSIDE air, that is why it comes on for defrosting or removing fogging of the windows. It's not a swamp cooler.

I heard it was from the new A/C components putting off vapors and that the smell would go away depending on the frequency of use. All my cars had the smell go away on it's own within 6 months. My new central air system in my home did the same thing when the compressor shut off and the fan continues to blow. The smell went away with it as well.

My company services hunders of car dealers in NJ and Pa. One of the things we do is deodorize vehicles with the same problem you are describing. I just responded to a similer post on the roadster sight. Take a look at it. It should help you.

Could you put a link to the post you're refering to?

Thanks,

Every car has its own smells, ex. all hondas smell the same after you turn the ac on (well, at least here in TX), I suggest the product called hmm...Ozium. It worked for my prelude for few months, however the moldy sock smell do come back
