Default Z Engine Problems, What should I do??

Strange problem here:

I took my Z in because the brakes were squeaking, they told me they took it out for a test drive and it died on the highway and now they need a new engine. I never had any engine probs at all before. The only mod i had on it was a JWT Pop Charger.

I have been waiting almost 2 months now and my car is still not done...is this standard practice for engine replacements??? Also will they be able to install a new engine as perfectly as it came from the factory...I am seriously considering complaining to a nissan for a new Z or fair market value on mine. I have a 2003 What do you guys think?

Did they show you a blown engine? Or you just took their word for it?

How did they know that the engine needed replacing?

They just called me and told me, I never inspected it....i took their word for it as they are the dealership & its covered under warranty, but I am beginning to think somthing fishy is up.

The dealer gets paid for doing warranty service on cars. That said, I wouldn't have just taken their word for it... the VQ is a solid engine and doesn't blow that easily.

They could be telling the truth, but I would want to check it out personally if it were me.

It probably died just like many other JWT owners cars have died when the clutch is put in and the revs drop too much when coming off a freeway. You just start it back up and go on your marry way. That is definitely no reason to replace an engine, and I doubt they could have killed your engine on a simple test drive. They are probably just trying to collect warranty work money from Nissan and you will still have the same engine. I would have demanded to see the car.

When I used to have the JWT my car died on me once (after running fine for 2weeks) , and had to be towed in, it would not start back up, the ecu got messed up and had to be reprogramed. I told the dealership that they only needed to reflash the ecu and everything else should be fine, but of course didn't tell them what caused it, but they didn't belive me on what needed to be done, so it took them about 2 days to figure out that they only needed to do is to reprogram the ecu and everything was back to normal. I knew what I was getting myself into, when I got the JWT and I have an 03. But after the dealership reprogramed my car I never had any problems with the JWT, it was running great.

Worse yet, not to give you something else to worry about.
Maybe they crashed it on the test drive and they are trying to get it fixed, so they told you it was a blown motor. I have seen Autobody take that long, but not an engine swap, unless they put it on the back burner. If I were you I would show up unexpectedly and demand to see the car, If they give you the run around threaten them by calling the police.

Please let us know how it goes.

If this is a Nissan dealer that has been hurting for business then I would believe that its a scam on nissan and you will have the same motor. If it is one that has a busy service Dept. then I would believe they might have done something to it and wont admit it to you. Because they get paid a set discounted hourly rate from Nissan for warantee work. Most dealers do not lurk for warantee work.

If your not sure if it's a busy Nissan Service Dept, call and try to schedule an oil change or some kind of service, see how many days booked they are, if any.

Good luck

Is their anyway to check to see if they actually replaced the engine or just left mine in place and collected warranty work money from nissan?? The dealership is the Colonial Nissan in medford, Massachussets...I don't believe it is overly busy. I am going to drop by unexpectingly today and demand to see my car as per your advice.....

Yes, if its a different engine, the VIN number will not match that on your chassis.

JDM motor for a Skyline GTR... bulletproof and you can "easily" tune it for 500+ horsepower from what I've heard.

I don't think there's been a swap yet on a 350Z but we're all eagerly awaiting...

Hope you get your Z back soon... I can't imagine being without it for that long!

As Rxtrom said, I'd say they probably damaged your car and are in the process of repairing it. It must have been quite some damage, for them to take that long to repair it... You mean to tell me that you, in two months, have not gone down to the dealership to look at your car and wtf was going on over there? If that had happened to me, I know I wouldn't have remained as calm as you seem to be: I would have been on my way to the dealership within seconds of the bad news phone call...
