I don't know about my Z but on my old 626 and f150 I got better mpg with premium so you may be right. As far as performance there as a thread awhile ago where a guy with a Z was losing to his friends SRT-4 then he realized the Z took premium and when he switched he was beating the SRT-4. Thats about as scientific as your tests so YMMV

On average, travel distances are far less for commuters in Germany. In the US, commuters burn much more volume of gas than in Germany on a daily average basis. Besides, Germany has a far superior public transport system than the US.

The higher gas prices in North America hit the consumers just as badly as they do in europe.

So quit your quit crying over your gas price.

If you want to conserve gas without risking engine knock (and I use the word "risking" quite liberally), use the recommended grade for your car, but drive slower. Avoid redlining your car. Also, adjust your tire pressure to 40 psi.

don't put 85 in your Z....i think it's a proven fact that most lacky nissan mechanics know dick about the Z. Some of the top ones do, but your average one doesn't...

Keep up to good literature guys ! It's amusing to read nice opinions based on conspiration theories. Sure, the japanese guys who designed our engines are getting a cut from Shell and Exxon for putting a "Premium Only" sticker on the gaz cap !
