The higher gas prices in North America hit the consumers just as badly as they do in europe.
So quit your quit crying over your gas price.
If you want to conserve gas without risking engine knock (and I use the word "risking" quite liberally), use the recommended grade for your car, but drive slower. Avoid redlining your car. Also, adjust your tire pressure to 40 psi.
