Default Is 'search' killing this forum?

Or is it lazy people?

Seems like everytime somebody posts a question about the Z or anything Z related in here, the first several people will say "use the search button first", blah blah.

I would be willing to bet that since this forum has been around for 3 years or so now, that most all questions have been asked and answered at one point or another, some dozens of times (Pop cough Charger cough). So what is the purpose of this forum if 90%+ of all questions are searchable and have already been answered? Geez if they haven't been answered in here, maybe they were answered on another website and we should search the entire internet before we post any question about anything Z related?

I have used the search button before many times but occasionally it will not or not clearly or not to my satifastion answer my question and I don't feel anybody should have to feel compelled to start their posts with, "Ok I did do a search but still have a question", so that somebody else can say "Oh I'm sure if you search long enough you will find that answer."

I think sometimes it's much easier to just post and ask the question and if somebody has the answer and wants to take a second to answer, you should just let them answer it, instead of playing the old "use the search" card? Some of us have very tight schedules and can't spend half an hour searching for an answer to a quick question in which somebody may have in depth knowledge of and can quickly give you the answer to.

Seems like there are people who just read each post, hoping that somebody is asking a question, so that they san say, "use the search button". Seems like some get off on doing it almost, similar to those that like to point out spelling errors all the time.

If people are not asking questions, a lot of what gets posted is just people with off topic stuff, pics of their new bolt ons or venting about their new problem with the car or vendor, which can be very helpful too.

Don't get me wrong I still like this forum a lot as it's the only Z forum I follow daily but wouldn't it be easier and quicker to just not reply at all, rather than reply with "use the search"? Whatever floats yer boat I guess.

I'm actually not posting this because somebody told me to use the search feature, which has happend a couple of times but I have seen it happening to other people and seems to be happening everytime somebody asks something. It seems to create something like road rage for some posters and those that reply to their question First time I was told to do a search, I was like F%^# that S$#@ man I'm not searching the whole internet for what I'm sure is a quick simple answer for a member who has it, until I saw the thing at the top of the page

I know I know this subject has already been covered and I should have used the search function

LOL.. I still love you guys anyway!!!

MUAHHHHHHHH

i usually say search if its a topic that's been talked to death and the poster is a noob.
also, some people don't use the titles-only option, which brings up all kinds of unrelated stuff.
and yes, i am a spelling ****. sorry, its just a pet peave of mine.

I never say to do a search. I answer their question hoping other people will chime in and I learn something new that I didn't know before about the subject.

Default FAQ and search are excellent features.

Consider the common question; “What is the best intake.” The OP asks nothing specific about features, nor does he explain “best.” There are a dozen possible answers because there are a dozen intakes on the market.

Lazy? Yes. Consider this post “Do the wheels on a such-and-such fit such-and-such. I’m too busy to look it up.” Seriously, if the OP is too lazy to look it up, I’m sure not going to take my time and do it for him.

Still, instead of asking “Did you search,” members might ask specific questions to clarify the original question. An example is “What are the best tires.” Members might ask “Are you willing to sacrifice performance for mileage?”

I like brevity, but may add a caveat to “Did you search?” and include “What did you discover?” and “Do you have any farther questions?” In other words, I’m willing to spend 5 minutes answering the question if the OP has spent 5 minutes attempt to find the answer.

All people learn differently, and instead of answering a question, I may refer the OP to a reference site. An example is “What is the offset for the 350Z Track rear wheels? If I refer the OP to a site about offset, then the OP has a better understanding of what is offset, and how to measure it. Instead of posting “positive 30 mm,” now the OP can assist others with their questions.

Good post.

Also, any time I make a new post, it is after extensively searching for the right answer. Sometimes there are conflicting answers. Other times when searching, it will find posts from the past 2-3 months, then it will jump back ALL the way to 2 years from now, which leads me to believe that either I am doing something wrong or there is a bug in the search feature. Anyone else have this problem?

i tink some of those "beat to death questions" such as "what's the best intake" should be stickied along with "noobies read this first"

I find that "search" often gives TOO MUCH info and you have to spend hours "refinning" your search or you have to have like a min. of 4 characters for some things thats not possible...

besides its always good to get fresh updated info.

if you dont like it DONT REPLY!!!!! and youll keep the thread short at least.

The plain and simple truth is that people like to be spoon-fed. Multiple people have said in this post that "using the search is hard", or "it takes too much time", or "it gives too many responses that you have to sort through". So, it's easier to just ignore the fact that people have already taken their time to answer the "new guy question" at least once before and request that they take their time to answer it again. The forum is certainly here for that, however IMHO it's rude, and a part of forum etiquette (particularly as someone who is new to the topic or forum) is using the tools that are provided by the forum to help yourself before cluttering things up with an age-old question. For those of us who use the "view new posts" option, it would be nice not to have to sift through all of the "what intake is best" type threads. They, to me, are as much of a hassle as the search function is to a new member, but again the forum is here for everyone and has no specific policy on such things, so anything goes in this regard.

Just my thoughts and maybe a different perspective on the subject. Certainly no offense or argumentative tone intended.

Peace.

amen brother.
i'm not so tactful: if you are dumb enough to blindly follow the recommendations of someone you don't even know, without doing the footwork and learning all the pros and cons yourself, you deserve what you get.
i believe the best help i can give someone is the tools to make their own educated decision, and the search function is one of the best tools.
