Proper downshifting method?

dont need to double clutch the 350Z!
just rev-match and your good to go...

3 Step Process
1. Push Clutch all the way in.
2. Blip throttle while shifting close to approiate RPM (takes practice).
3. EASE the clutch out.
Sometimes I blip too much but its not nearly as bad as if I dont blip enough... ( at least thats how it feels)

So, basically all you need to do is kinda keep an eye on your tach before you shift, and then hit the clutch and rev limit it to match what your tach read before your shift and then up-shift?
How about down-shifting? Do you do the same thing to where you want to rev-match it again, even though you are slowing down? Or would you want the RPMs slightly lower during shifting?

For beginners.....when downshifting just give the gas pedal a quick press before engaging the clutch in the lower gear. Your RPM's will go higher and when you re-engage the clutch it will be smoother than normal. Give it a shot.
Once you do that you'll get an idea as to what rev-matching is. Then you can guesstimate what specific RPM you want for any given downshift gear.

+1 to no double clutching. Maybe on old trucks it was necessary
I rev match by feel now. It becomes second nature just like shifting regularly.
You don't really NEED to do it too often. When I slow down for a light, I usually just let the car slow down and then clucth in/neutral at a light. May cause extra brake wear. Our car can go 20 miles an hour in 6th gear although not recommended. Other cars would stutter and stall.

That's one of the best advice on rev matching I've ever heard !It as to go through feel eventually. But learning what revs corresponds to what speed in any given gear will help to "plan" your shifts.
Hey, and please make use of the H gates on our gear boxes ! It's pretty useless to row through all the gears when a "simple" 4th to 2th can do.
I've started double clutching recently. Not that much slower and easier on the tranny.
What else ? The engine is not built to slow the car. Use the brakes for that ! Braking distances will be unaffected (might actually improve).

you can skip gearst.. you can accelerate to the top of 1st gear and then drop it to 4th...
you can go from 5th to 2nd...
all by pressing the clutch in once...

Hard to explain? I think you guys all did a great job of explaining it. I 'rev match' when I drive, but I never knew there was a term for it, it was just the way my father taught me how to down shift. He's 100% off the boat Italian, and his explaination was 'you do or else you break car'. A lot of people I know don't even down shift, they just put it in nutral and just 'start over' once they stop.
gah, i hate thread diggers so sorry, but i have a question, im new to the whole z thing and "cars" with MTs, i had a jeep a couple years ago with a 5spd, but didnt care about it at all, so i never cared about the trans..
but anyways, after reading all this, i only have one question left. do you "tap" the gas and throw the rpms up to where you want, or do you hold it at what you want for that split second? thanks

Tap the pedal so the revs go high enough so when you let off the clutch on lower gear, the tach needle "lands" at it's natural point versus "climbing" (not enough blip of throttle). Once you get used to it, you don't even need to look at the tach so much. Watch some of the Japanese race drivers. They downshift alot.
well i just went out for about an hour of trying and got the hang of it pretty good, i figured it was just tapping, i still need more practice though, feels much better than the jerking... but i have to admit, when im coming to a stop, i just hold the clutch in untill i stop
