Take it to the dealership if you're still under warranty because that's a pretty common problem w/ Z's.

Sounds like something is very wrong, but it should be under warranty. I've heard of quite a few people who have this problem shifted from 2 & 3 to 6 (need to give the syncro time to spin the gear up), but never from 5 to 6. Sounds like a VERY worn syncro.

This should be covered by your warranty so I would take it in if I were you. From what I've heard, Nissan tends to replace the whole tranny rather than rebuild (not just the 03s, the 04s also... I have no clue why), so you may be in store for that...

A small brass or copper plate that functions almost like a clutch plate and syncronizes the speed of different gears in the tranny so they don't grind when you shift.

Like a clutch, they can wear out. Very fast shifts and shifts (up or down) between non sequential gears tend to wear them out more quickly.

Don't worry about sounding dumb when you go in... my experience is that most Nissan techs do not know what they are.

There are no recalls for the 350Z. None.
