Default I got stuck, dang LSD!??

Got caught a little off guard coming into this parking lot at an awkward angle and felt the total loss of traction as one of the rear tires came off the ground. At first I thought I had slipped into neutral but then was like WTF? Let it roll back, regained traction and gave it a little more throttle to keep moving past the incline.

What happened? I thought the other wheel should have kicked in??

the viscous lsd won't work in that situation. our factory lsd uses fluids to lock both tires. not enough load resistance in that situation to lock both tires. thats why we should get a real lsd.

when a tire comes off the ground on any LSD there is not going to be enough pressure on the clutches to turn the tire on the ground. You would need a locker to make both tires turn.

he was probably going in or coming out of a sloped driveway (i.e. gas station, fast food place) with his car at an angle, causing 1 rear tire to be off the ground. my car does this alot, more cause its lowered now.

I hope your right. I once saw this guy coming down a ramp with no barriers/guards on either side and he somehow drove the front left wheel off the ramp. so basically he had his Z bottomed out on god knows what part of his undercarriage with 2 wheels in the air. that was a sickening sight.

I have a set of Hotchiki sway bar. Anytime I go in/our a parking lot or anything w/an incline, one of the rear wheels will be off the ground. That might be what he was experiencing. I have open diff but I thought VLSD or any LSD is supposed to hook up both wheels and eliminate being stuck.

yes, but like they said, it wont work if there isnt enough weight on the system. If a tire is in the air, there is no weight to have the clutches work. So i can definitly understand how this happend. Kinda funny too!

Yeah on an incline coming in at an angle most cars with tight suspensions and stiff unibodies will bring the inner tire off the ground. Depending on the steepness of the incline of course.

Its also like jacking up one the front wheels and watching the jack lift both front and rear tires.

Thanks for the info guys.

I got stuck quite a few times already. That's kind of embrassing to have a high horsepower sports car stuck w/one wheel spinning, looks like a sitting duck.

here we go

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential8.htm

and

"The Quaife is extremely strong and durable and since the Quaife is gear operated, it has no plates or clutches that can wear out and need costly replacement"

The gears don't "lock", but yes, both tires must be loaded for the worm gears to maintain their bias ratio. Dogleg a Quaiffe and you won't have any limited slip action.
A clutch type does not need to have both tires loaded, and would have helped in his situation. The clutches are locked by the rotation of the ring gear to push apart the ramps inside the diff case.

oh, I was thinking it was some sort of helical cut gears that would bind under load, I must be thinking of something else.
