i actually think it is because being you have a MT and maybe she has an AT and therefore how you drive makes a difference in the exhaust note.
secondly, if you are judging the sound from the inside than you have to account that the Z has less sound dampening so we get much more engine/tranny noise than the G's do. but otherwise from the outside, it is hard to tell the difference between the Z and the G

I can usually tell...it's a more subtle howl....less grunt than the G35c or 350z.
Difference between G and Z is how the Z kinda has a throaty garble at the end of the shift like it can't wait to exhaust enough gas.

Guys I called Nissan in JP.... on this one, The G35 pushes more db's on exhaust than the Z, it is louder, the mufflers are totally different. They look the same, but aren't on outside or inside. And the FX is louder than the G and the Z, due to the fact it uses less Exhaust piping, while holding the G's exhaust with smaller tips. Those were words from a Nissan representative. I was having a long argument with a friend, so we just agreed to go half on a calling card and called nissan Japan.
I'm not sure if the guy there lied to me, it took me 4 calls to get an english spoken rep... other than that. I myself hear the G making lots of nice exhaust tones without the pushing of the gas. You can ease on it and it growls, our Z's need 4k to sound a little louder.

BTW 3-4k Zs sound becomes aparent everytime you pass that mark you get the sig Z sound, ......whats wierd is i finally have been able to hear mine. I just drive with the windows down lol.....i was pissed cause when i see other zs i hear there tone, ....and im like am i making that same hot sound with a stock exhuast....finally after being in traffic i wind down my window and pull back traffic ....floor it in the holland tunnel and yea....its there. Gosh man....even a guy in a bmw z4 was like nice sound lol. BTW they make almost no noise whatso ever . lol

You guys can't even hear your exhaust until you're over 3K RPMs? That's weird. I can hear my exhaust under 2,000 RPM, and then I can really hear it pretty loud over 3,000 RPM. I don't have to roll the windows down or anything to hear it (between 2-3K, I can't hear it though) I'm thinking there might be a hole or something, since the day I bought my Z (I got a used 2004 Touring edition with 30K miles), I ran over a huge metal pipe on the freeway and am afraid that I might have damaged underneath the car. Please tell me this is normal.

you guys are making noise, you just don't hear it as much in the coupe. it's definitely not as pronounced as the G, except at that range above and the 3-4k range, but go drive a roadster. you'll hear it. or even better, go drive a roadster through a tunnel.
