OK so a semi going much faster than you it will suck you into its lane. In heavy rain it is going to throw a lot of spray. Now odds are that if you had done nothing at all you would have been fine, but this takes a bit of confidence and experience to 1) anticipate the feeling of being sucked sideways into a semi and 2) anticipating the temporary blindness when the water hits your windshield. You sort of got to grit your teeth and just try to steer straight ahead with minor corrections even though you can't see a thing. Hitting the brakes in a lot of water with summer tires with wide tread may have been just enough to start your car to loose traction, so called hydroplaning. Steering then sent you into a spin.

Be glad you did not get hurt and learn from the experience. In the distant past, I have been guilty of hitting the barriers on both sides of an LA freeway in the rain, so I am one up on you. When you replace your tires look into a set that have tested tops for wet traction such as made by Goodyear. Those of us with a few miles under our belts will gladly give up a bit of dry traction for wet weather grip.

I'll post some pics up monday when I go by the dealership for an estimate. I guess I can still drive my old car, still haven't sold it yet. 1988 Porsche 944, doors don't open so it'll be dukes of hazard style. Anywho, my Z. TO me it looked like the fender was caved in against the tire or something, but like I said i'll know Monday. I guess this could give me a chance to finally get my body kit. Heh.

lol @ beater 944

good luck with it, you got pwnd by lift-off over steer and/or trail-braking combined with inexperience, but that's how we all learn, hope you can get it fixed asap!

Mixing it up with a semi is a recipe for a dirt nap. Glad to hear that you are not a casualty.

BTW need photos.

Well I dont get it either man.

Look, I drive on snow covered, icy roads ALL THE TIME. I have yet to have had a semi "blow" me into a spin. That just dosent happen! Now, I have been pinned or tossed to edge of the road by a truck, but again, nothing that would have induced a spin.....
I'm not going to call BS on this one, but your story just dosent sound right, and your insurance adjuster/investigator will think the same.

There are many ways around that. But we'll leave it there

Sounds believable to me. A lot of times when conditions are bad semi's can travel faster than cars because they have more weight and more traction, and the morons driving don't feel the need to slow down for everyone else. I've had semi's blow by me before and almost blow me into the other lane or even suck me in. I think a lot of it depends on the strength and direction of the wind. Since this guy was going around a curve he was probably using up most of his available traction to begin with. Granted, an experienced driver would not have wrecked. Hitting the brakes in a situation where you're sliding is a bad thing to do until you straighten out and regain control. All you end up doing by hitting the brakes in a spin/slide is perpetuate the spin further. He's only 17. Chalk it up to inexperience.

Hopefully the damage is not too bad. Nobody here can say how much it will cost because it depends entirely on the damage done. You could be lucky or you could be screwed. Time will tell. Good luck and keep us posted.

last octover or november I was heading to my brothers around 5am in the morning to pick him up. We used to carpool. I was in the right line preparing to exit. Hit a fat pocket of water and hydroplaned. Spun out all the way to the carpool lane and hit the center divide wall facing oncoming traffic (this was in my civic) Point I'm trying to make is that the car looked like it had a few minor damages, but I came to find out that the whole frame was bent and so it was counted as totalled.

Well, I had to drive it off of the interstate so the tow truck could get to me. When I was driving it, nothing seemed off like a bent frame or anything, like it wasn't pulling to a certain direction. The left tire is dragging against the fender or something underneath, when I got out the tire was smoking and I could smell burnt rubber. So I dunno.

ugh...
time for some Q & A

1. who paid for the car? (If i paid for it, my fist would be f*cking swollen - from punching the wall)

2. Why are you going so fast in the rain? There are threads after threads about how the Z is pathetically terrible in the wet... dont tell me you skipped those...

3. Why you buy the base model forgoing VDC?????

4. Would you consider HPDE now ...

When you hit something going that fast (>30) your going to cause more than just body damage. The body is designed to crumble and whatever is under it is due to get bent.

I bought the car, and I was doing 50 in a 70. Yeah i'm pretty much pissed, and for the swollen fist part. I assaulted the neighbor's mailbox with a 2x4. I guess that's the only good thing that came out of this. I hope my car isn't totall messed up.

I was in mid spin, and swiped the wall. Didn't feel like we hit very hard. Airbags didn't come out, etc.

You assaulted your neighbors mailbox with a 2x4??? Are you sure you're 17 yet? lol.... Tampering with someones mailbox is a federal offense.

My Z does quite well in the rain. Bone stock base model. No TCS/VDC, and stock potenzas. Just this morning on my way home from my girls house I got up to 120mph in light/moderate rain with no problems.
