which one do you guys think is faster? i've heard that german engines are a bit different and faster? is this true?
it is true that different manufacturers have rated power in different ways. however, the difference is in measure. german engines are not 'faster' and are not engineered any better.

for example, lets compare the VQ35 engine (350Z,G35,etc) in 280hp trim to the S54 (M3) engine in 320hp trim, both using mfr ratings, which rate power at the engine, before the rest of the drivetrain and wheels.

Enthusiests tend to find that Zs and Gs get around 235hp on the ground without mods, and that number may be higher or lower depending on other factors. With the M3, people are seeing around 280whp.

If you do the math you will see around 16% loss on the Z/G and around 12% loss on the M3. This difference is not because the M3 is magically better at getting power to through the drivetrain, but is instead because of how BMW rates their engines. Combine that difference with an unusually wide (for its day) powerband, and you can see how people think the M engines are magical. If anything, it really means that there's a lot more to assessing power than the manufacturer's hp rating.
