Dealer wants to borrow my Z
My Dealer has a 76 280 that is Red. They Also are getting a Red 89 300ZX. I Am trading in my 92 300ZX TT (mint) thats also Red. When the New Zs show up they are going to have a big open house or somthing. With all the Zs lined up. So they want to Use my New Z and keep it on the show floor for a week or so. Being that I am the only one that orderd a redline. They told me that they have confirmed Delivery for 3 Zs the first week in September. And mine is one of them. How much would you guys charge for the dealer to keep your car an extra week. They were thinking around $500. But it sounds like they really want to use it and i think i could get more from them. what should i do???
P.s How cool would it be to have two of my Zs on display and seeing everyone Drooling

Seems like the tables have turned in your favor...after the pre orders are gone the dealers will charge (and probably get) whatever they want for the car..now it's your turn...How much would you think the car would rent for...$200/day...$250/day..I think $500 for the week is giving it to them...Is it worth $500 to you to be without your new car that you've waited so long to get...Don't think that would be enough for me...Will your dealer recognize that you are doing him a favor, and remember that in the future when you need a favor..Somehow I don't think the dealers have done anything "Extra" for us..I know this probably doesn't help much but had to throw my 2 Lire in
Don't do it!! When I bought my Audi S4 they put it in the showroom "for protection" and to show it off since they never could stock any. When I went to pick it up there were prints all over it and even a small scratch (buffed out ok). Bastards new exactly when I was going to be there. You'd think they would have cleaned it again.
If you do it make it worth your peace of mind.

$500 is not bad, its like 1 months payment. But like others have said, is it worth it to you? I would make them rope it off and give you a loaded out 6-speed Max for the week. I would also make them give you a loaner car every time you get the Z serviced. Make them treat you like you want. But I also think not all dealer's word can be believed, so maybe it would be better to get all your compensation up front. You could also try to get a commission of any sales that week, your cars will be bringing in customers.

I'd consider the fact that they are making between $2500-3000 on the sale of the car (i don't remember the exact invoice pricing that was posted a while back). When your car gets delivered, you'll have been waiting over 6 months to drive your Z, so while one could argue "whats another week?", i think most of us would agree that unless the dealership gave you a great deal, for example selling the car to you at invoice, it just wouldn't be worth it because of many of the reasons already mentioned.
they could always use a Red Tamiya model

Is NO a definate enough answer. I personally do not think I would go for it. As others have pointed out, if they sweeten the pot and only display it and rope it off, then it might be worth it to you. This is one you must decide. As for me I would say......( you already know my answer.)
I've got my dealers only Z in any color. He wants to put it in his showroom for one day, and I'm thinking $500 would be reasonable. I'm concerned with the risk of letting him show it for one day, I couldn't imagine letting him keep it for a week.

For everyone considering "loaning" their car to the dealer... consider why you are getting the Z.
If it is because you want to put it on display and make some money, then go for it. If it is because (like for me) you want the car and want it now.. then don't.
Personally, I would not do it.
Remember the following as you ponder your decision...
"Have you ever gone through a parade of homes 'model' home after it has been looked through for a week? If you have, then the answer is a simple one."

What you really need to worry about it some young salesman or mechanic revving the **** out of your vigin (5 miles on the odometer) 3.5 liter engine. The break in of that engine will be screwed up forever. Don't belive them when they say no one will drive it. For good gas mileage and oil comsumption over the life of the car it needs to be broken in carefully.
I myself only buy new cars right off the truck. I know how people test drive.

I think some of the people are overreacting here. Obviously, it's up to you - but I would probably let the dealer have it for a few days for a reasonable amount of $. ($500 seems fair to both you and him...) I would NOT let anyone test drive it, but if they want to show the car off, I don't see any particular reason not to let them. As someone pointed out, $500 is practically one month's payment on the thing, and that's not a bad deal for letting them borrow it for a week.
Whatever you do, don't **** the dealer off - if you decide not to let them, politely decline. After all, if you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you.

Try this: Tell them that for 1 week you will show up at the time they request. At this time you will allow people to look at the car for X minutes, and then give a ride to one person.
No scratches, no worries, and you can still collect the $500.

Good plan,

Borrow? Acid burn's idea sounds reasonable to me. Iwould not leave the car at the dealership under any circumstances, because I've tested many cars and I know how I drive. Also, what about the dealership staff, they are the first ones who want to drive one, they will be selling them!
I am not sure I would even do it at all, even with acid burn's idea. Until a dealership has a demo, your new toy could be driven by anyone who had the key. In 1995 , the BMW dealership in OKC had a new yellow M3 sitting on the showroom floor. It was sold, but the owner was in Europe(I was told) and he was letting them show it in the showroom until he got back. I asked if I could sit in it to see if I fit. The salesman said it was OK. I sat down in the driver's seat, adjusted the wheel and asked the salesman if the seat could be adjusted lower. He pointed out a lever on the side of the seat, I pulled on it and immediately crashed down abouy 4 inches without intending to at all. I am a large person and weighed about 240 lbs at the time; I could have broken the seat mechanism or worse. Thinking about that, I wouldn't do it. Someone earlier said decline politely, you want them to sevice the car well, so be nice!
