Need advice on performance mods.

First I'd like to say I love this site and all the opinions, but like my grandpa told me, "Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one".. LOL.. Anyway, you really have to do your research and you will still find that there is not a catch all to your problem... You will find that a lot of the post regarding hp's have common changes ie exhaust, intake, plenum spacer, etc.... From what I have found 25hp - 30hp is not a difficult task but in the confines of a dollar figure.. That is the complication.. This is my method... I had about the same budget as you but, after doing research I through the budget out and changed it to a wish list.. As time goes by and I can affort it I will buy things off my wish list.. Technology has a way of changing quarterly so something that is good today is out dated tomorrow..
Exhaust: So I read up on all the exhausts that many people have on this site.. What I found is that they ranged from $800 - $1500 (There are more expensive models out there).. Once I narrowed it down.. I like a certain look... That knocked a couple off... Than I looked up performance results (anyone the posted information or I saw in a mag..) This doesn't mean that your car will perform that well but it get's you in the ball-park.. Also keep in mind the weight is a factor... Less weight = hp's
Plenum Spacer: Easy descion.. cost alone :-)
ECU: This was a hard one and I'm still having a problem with this. My computer didn't take the map (I call it a map because I race motorcycles and can remap my fuel injection to correct my power curve and tune the motor)..My car (used 03) didn't except the full map????? this cost $600.00 so I will see later what the problem is..
Intake: I decided against the intake because I'm really leaning toward a turbo system so for the extra (from what i read) ~ 4hp's I can keep that money to go toward the turbo (~$250 - $400)
I had all this done for a whopping $2,500.00 (do to some issues with exhaust and a supposedly bent frame - which I will be taking up with the dealer that I bought the car from).. I also have a idling issue which I need to resolve...
Sorry for the lengthy post even though I omitted a lot of stuff...The real question is HOW MUCH HP's did I have and WHAT IS IT NOW???
Honestly, to keep my budget down I decided not to dyno the car as is... because I knew I would not rip the exhaust off or the plenum spacer.. Now the map?????? AAM made me feel really good about working with them to get that resolved. They pointed out everything that an unbiased dealership should have told me when I bought the car (Can't cry over spilt milk).. STILL LOVE THE CAR!!!!
So my starting platform will be whatever numbers I get after tunning the car with the AAM Exhaust/ECU/Plenum Spacer...
I will use numbers found on the web and Import Tuner(IM)May Issue) to compare my numbers (hopefully I will dyno my car this comming weekend).. IM's base line was a 05 350z (220hp 207tq). They added Buddy Club Exhaust,Injen Intake,Plenum Spacer ($1444.97 no labor) = 237.7hp 223tq They even provided the temp when the test was run...
So in short there are a ton of factors to adding hp... Above that you have to ask yourself why... example my bike dyno'd at 167.8rwhp.. I raced against guys with between 175 - 190rwhp... I have a great launch and changed gearing... They could not beat me on the road race circuit(lap times up to 2 seconds faster) or in the 1/4 (Mostly street racing)...
If my car is right around a lot of the figures than I'm fine :-).... You might not care but if my car is way less than those numbers I LOVE THE SOUND OF THE EXHAUST :-) At least I feel fast for now :-)... LOL ROLF
I love to write so please exuse the long post. I use to write short stories about roadracing motorcycles hince the name..

Hey Thanks storyteller. I also love this site. I am pretty new at it so forgive me if I am so ignorant. I appreciate the help.

Alright guys, I appreciate all the comments but let's try and stay focused on the topic of discussion. You guys know I only want to spend between $1500 and $3000. I don't really desire a huge horsepower gain. If I did I would just throw down $5000 and go forced induction. I just want a little more push. Just enough to be able to beat a STI or EVO without my butt cheaks quivering. I don't want to compremise the reliability and quality of my car. I just want detailed information on performance mods from people who have purchased them or know alot about them. I want to know how it affected your car, good? or Bad? If you do recommened a certian part. let's just say intake. What brand and why. Basically i was hoping I could learn from some of your mistakes or successes. Thank you once agian for all the comments. Exept for the $69.99 turbo peice-o-sh*t, are you F***ing serious?
Popcharger - $125
Y-pipe/Test Pipes - $500
Plenum Spacer - $300
Topspeed headers - $250
JWT Clutch/Flywheel - $750 (+install)
ECU Reflash - $500
Total in parts = $2,475 + 800 in labor for headers and clutch/flywheel...
Total = $3275
Should gain you about 50-75 crank hp at least, and the clutch/flywheel should help you put more of that crank hp down to the wheels.
Not too shabby eh? Just dont go with a muffler, go with the Y pipe and the test pipes. It'll give your car a sleeper look to it as well.

Like many others say get an intake...I have an AEM and love it, the sounds is awesome.
Also get a spacer....I have a motordyne 5/16 and it deff helps out in the high rpm range.
These would deff. be great first mods and would give you some extra little hp and you would still have $1000-$2500 of your budget left over to do w/e you please.

Intake= Injen sp1986- for sound and bling factor
Exhaust= Nismo- for sound and quality
Grounding Kit= Extreame- for better grounding and bling factor
This is what I have , I spent 1300 so far ,5/16 spacer around 275 is next , that said Im over 1500 and would be lucky to have 20+rwhp .
Research this site and do what you want , alot of good info on here,
my setup may not have the best gains but I like it.

I have spent 1275.00 on my parts and that includes labor, I havent dyno since I got the pulley and short ram. My basline stock was 223 whp...so it will take some cash to get 25-30 whp. These engines are maxed for power out of the factory so it isnt easy gettimg more power out of it...best money spent is FI to get the big gains but you have to build the engine or you will blow it up in a minute.
Why are you guys so afraid of N2O? It is cheap and makes you go fast and cleans out cylinders for you. Just do it. Oh and LOL at the "should I just throw down $5000 and go FI" idea. You guys are nuts.
