Default What's Reasonable Oil Consumption?

I've had my '06 MT ZR since mid-February and have 6,000 miles on it. It was broken in pretty much according to the manual and is generally driven moderately with a few trips to the readline and some enthusiastic backroad rides.

The oil was changed at 3,300 miles by the dealer who used Agip 5w30.

Consumption seems to be about a quart every 1,500 miles which seems awfully high. No leaks that I can see.

What oil consumption is being experienced by members of this forum?

Thanks.

Ken

Sorry for the bandwidth: I just saw that there is a poll on this issue (I'm not surprised.) I'd still appreciate comments.

Something is wrong! You shouldn't be going through any oil.

I am just under 3k miles in my new Z. I read your thread and decided to check the dipstick for the first time. Granted, I didn't check it the first time when I got the Z, all indications tell me I have near full if not full about of oil. The oil is clean as hell too...I've never seen oil that clean once its been used even for a bit. Hell..it looked brand new to me.

the Z tends to use synthetics a little bit more but the dipstick shouldn't dropped more than 1/2 a quart between oil changes say every 3k miles.

Ok well im glad you brought up this thread man... ive done about 10,700 km.. im not sure what that is in miles. But at the 9000 km mark.. there was absolutely no oil in it wat so ever! took it to the dealer... they refilled it, and saw if there were any leaks. Nope.. no leaks..

What else could be the problem ????

I've been having oil consumption issues from day one with my 2005 G35 6mt. They replaced the shortblock at around 16k miles and its 2,500 miles later, my oil reads at less then half (about 1/3) on the dipstick. I was gonna trade in my sedan for a 06 350z but I guess the problem is still there.... Hmm... Lexus IS350 here I come I guess.

I'm at 6,500 miles and use about 1/2 qt in 2,500. I was hoping for a little better but I can live with it. I use Casrtol 10-30.

I have 3700 miles on my new motor now after having it replaced with a new longblock back in Jan. for the same issue. I have a writeup around here on it if any needs a point of reference.

Zero oil consumption is acceptable. If the motor had 100,000 miles I could see a quart every so often. But a new motor, no. You should not be burning oil.

Default What's Reasonable Oil Consumption -- Update 1

I went to my dealer this morning to have the oil changed prior to a weekend trip to Chicago (from Central NJ). I told him I was burning too much oil. He told me to come back after 1,000 miles so he could check the usage. This seems reasonable. I'll, no doubt, pass the 1,000 mile mark on my return trip from Chicago, but as long as the oil is above the minimum mark I won't add any. I'll visit the dealership on Tuesday morning.

We'll see what happens.

What was your oil consumption? What was the mileage when you had your engine replaced? Did the dealer "volunteer" to change the engine or did it require pressure on your part? Why a long block rather than a short block?

Sorry for all the questions, but this could be a very important issue for me.

Thanks.

03 Z with 66k miles. Just changed my synthetic 10w30 and got very close to 5 quarts out after 3500 miles... I didn't even lose 1/4 quart in 3500 on an "old" Z.

Check out this link. It should answer your questions. The biggest part is finding a good dealer. They vouched for the LB because my cams were scored from oil depervation. Let me know if you have any more questions.
