300HP Rumors Are True!
You- "Aghh! Not this again! Get over it asswipe! Everyone knows its 287!.. 287!...No more...No less... 287!"
Me- "Hey, calm down and could you please stop calling me asswipe. Thanks."All I'm saying is that Nissan probably did have a 300 HP version of the production car and so will we.
I bet they tuned & tested the Z to 300 HP & some wiseass maketing guy says "OK, now tune it down to 287 and send the 300 HP code to NISMO for their ECU upgrades. That'll be an extra 13 HP for $600!"
Nissan had to leave some room to make the NISMO ECU. Normally, the auto manufacturer tunes the car more consevatively for reliablity & drivablity reasons. Then the aftermarket geeks modify the code for more perfomance & less reliablity/driveability. In this case the aftermarket geeks and the auto maker geeks are one and the same. They have to leave room for themselves.
I don't know if its the 4 hours of sleep or the hang over but I'm happy about this. The NISMO ECU code will come from the Nissan engineers. They are are the same company that honors the warranty. The VQ is a very complicated engine. I wouldn't trust an aftermarket shop to safely mess with the code. We will essentially get a production tune... a 300HP version!
This way we get 300HP, Nissan/NISMO gets an extra $600 but we can make it back on our insurance over time by avoiding the ~300HP insurance premium.
the nissan rep also said (in the los angeles times article) that if 287 horsepower seemed a little low, it's because they've made it so they can increase the horsepower later in the model's life span.

I think I'm getting addicted to speculation. I don't know what I'll do after we have all Z related info. Maybe trade pork bellies on the futures market?

When I got my info from Japan, my guy told me 300hp and 0-60 in 5.2. Now Nissan has released a slower car so i for one think the ESU was changed. There is tons of room for extra power with this engine people, if you can't squeeze it to 300hp or more, there's something really wrong.
When i wrote my buddy overseas and bitched him out for giving me the wrong info, telling him that the car was 287 he wrote back laughing telling me to not count my chickens before they are hatched. He said, the car has well over 300 HP in power, you just have to know how to get it is all.
Then he proceeded to discuss the 4.5L V8 he saw crammed into a 350Z and asked me if I had heard anything over here about it. Of course I have not, so it's all basically rumor at this point.
I myself think it was just a test, heck, car companies of have been cramming bigger engines into frames since they were able to do so.
Then again.... maybe it's a sign of things to come? Nissan does have a paddle shift 8 gear transmission that will debut over here in the GT-R or so I have been told. (although official Nissan word is that I was misinformed and such a transmission does not exist)
Hmmm.... I'll keep you informed as I hear it. Track_350Z is a lot closer to the truth than he knows!

I'm sure an ECU mod can incrrease the HP to 300. Question is, why didn't they do this stock? Perhaps being conservative? They knew we would be bitching about 287HP. Well, I'm sure within the next year there will be an ECU upgrade no doubt.

My guess is they kept it under 300 for insurance purposes.
VQ... I am not sureon the 8 speed... I'll get back to you on that. I know it's a paddle shift though, I was unaware it's an available option on the Skyline in Japan.
Crayons... the GT-R is scheduled for a mid 2004 debut, it's still in the air as to whether the US gets it or not though. It is planned but if sales for the G35 and 350Z are terrible, than I doubt NNA would launch a higher priced car here. It's all supply and demand.

Could someone tell me what exactly a paddle shifter is and what it does? Also, what are the advantages to them. Everyone seems to lust after them for some reason. Do they make shifting (and thus 0-60 speed) faster? Also, I have read about a "Tiptronic" usually mentioned when discussing Porsches. Is this a type of paddle shifter?
I can honestly say that this site has been a huge education for me. I can now intelligently discuss cars with those in the know because of all of you guys (and girls) Thanks in advance!

Paddleshifter was developed by and is used by the Formual 1 racers. Where your gear shifter is actually located on the steering wheel as shown above. I believe there is a new U.S. bound Maserati that will be the 1st production car to have it here in the States. I can't really remember the name of the vehicle. As far as paddleshifters having faster times, I don't think so. Maybe just more of a convenience thing than actually performance since you're shifting with fingertips than your enitre right arm.
Tiptronic, sportronic, clutchfree manual, or whatever each individual manufacturer wants to call it, is where you have an auto tranny with the convenience of allowing the operator to switch from auto to a clutch free manual mode. The majority of these are usually 4 spd. In the Zs case they have a 5spd version. I had one a '01 Eclipse GT. No where near as fast as a manual; however, it's very convenient when stuck in traffic. The computer is usually a second or so slow in response time to when you actually move the shifter. I'm assuming that this will be the same for the paddleshifter. Then again, newer technology so I could be wrong.

Actually, the E46 BMW M3 (year 2001 and higher) has the SMG II (Sequential Manual Gearbox) that is the first true clutchless manual transmission. It has paddle shifters on the steering wheel, and the hand shifter only shifts up and down
. That should be the first production car in the United States to have paddle shifting (but someone feel free to correct me on this).

I have to agree with JMANZthey kept the hps.down under 300hp for insurance reasons.Just like motorcycles anything over 500cc gets a big bump in premiums.Modify from nismo and save on insurance what they don't know won't hurt them.......................
