Default Hatch Pistons

I put a Nismo spoiler on my 2005 Z. Over time the pistons holding the hatch up have completely wore out. I guess the aftermarket Nismo was too much weight. Anyways, anyone have a solution to help me out. I'm thinking industrial strength. Anyone else having this issue?

You can get the shocks that come with the OEM spoiler, they are much stiffer than the shocks w/out the oem spoiler. But I think the nismo spoiler would still be too heavy.

the nismo spoiler is heavy enough that it has completely shot my shocks. Any ideas guys? Anyone having similar problems?

nissan dealership has them. they are like 120 bucks for each side. they were trying to get me to buy them if i got the wing. said they were a must. nismo makes them just call nissan and ask for a part number.

You can also purchase custom made ones off the internet. They have higher opening force/strength.

a little off topic for this thread but does anyone know if aftermarket spoilers sich as the nismo spoiler provide any actual downforce or are they jsut cosmetic?

I have the nismo spoiler installed. It does provide additonal downforce as the added weight keeps the back end from sliding around. If you have a Z without the spoiler or the lip spoiler, those don't provide the additonal weight to the rear that is needed to prevent the sliding. Of course, doesn't really matter, unless you're an agressive driver like me. lol.

same problem here, but I think spending $240 on new pistons is a waste. I just use half of a billiards stick to hold the thing up when I need to.

there are higher strenth hatch shocks that are available that are recommended when using the NISO or any other spoilers...

I think the kit is around $240 i dont remember for sure...

but it does help the rear hatch just pop rite up...

I'm having the exact same problem and its irritating the heck out of me....I always gotta hold the trunk up with my head when grabing something...i noticed that when in extreme heat for a long time.."I live in AZ"...they will hold up...but when parked in the garage, they won't hold up...I'm almost thinking defective??? How much at the 866-211-7389 #?

I dont remember the price off the top of my head...

but Andy, Brian, Justin, or Eddie will take care of you on it...

THere are also these 2 rubber popper things... they help pop the hatch up initially... they are a bit cheaper then the rear hatch shocks...

Yikes!! This topic rears it's ugly head again! Yes.. The upgraded shocks are recomended by Nissan when you go with the rear deck spoiler, and they will keep your hatch open........but.....if you are having trouble with the latch not clearing the lock (meaning, you have to lift the hatch while unlocking it), then the new shocks will not fix this problem. Jason informed me of the dampner weight in the hatch, and since removing it, I have not had a problem with the hatch popping open. $240.00 is correct plus $80.00 for Nissan to install. What really bothered me was my local Nissan's "Platinum Award" winning service team telling me that I modded my car (with a Nismo part that I bought from them), and that it was not covered by warranty. $300.00+ later and the hatch still won't pop open. Unfortunately, if your shocks are dusted, you'll have to buy new ones, but I would take the dampner out as well.

Dampner? Can you explain what that is please? And how to remove it? Thanks.

Yo. If you carefully remove the plastic from the under side of the hatch, (I was able to do it with my fingers-so not to scratch anything), you will see it. 4 bolts and it's off. It's been almost a year now and the hatch pops open and I don't hear any rattles, which is (I guess), what it's there to prevent. I would have thought that it was there to help the hatch close, but your spoiler will take care of that. Nissan calls it a dampner--so it's there for some vibration reason.
