Default Poll: Should the warn meter make a comeback for chronic abusers of this forum?

At first, I didn't like the idea...BUT after reading RealDeal and UncutZ's countless ridiculous and brainless posts...I think it might be a good incentive for them (and others like them) to SEARCH OR JUST SIMPLY USE COMMON SENSE before posting....Thoughts??

Damn, we got a newb calling out two other newbs. What makes you think you are any better then those two guys? This thread is just as pointless and rude as any thread those guys have made.

You're not a newb. You're just going senile, old man. For a few days, we all had "warning meters" under our screen names. It was to let people know how close they were to a ban. I guess they opted to get rid of them.

Seeing their warning level doesn't do much good for some people. Guys gets warned regularly and still do stupid crap that gets them banned eventually. Then they go to another site and whine about being banned.

I never claimed to be better, more knowledgeable, OR less apt to make a ridulucous post (Although I think I'm a LOT less likely to do so).

As far as being pointless ....I think it's EXTREMELY pointless to have folks like RealDeal wasting bandwidth and asking outright silly a_zz questions or just posting stuff to **** people off.

And I honestly don't think I'm being rude, I just know what a majority of the room feels about this dude...and just wanted to confirm via a poll.

You might be right on how a majority of us feel about certain people around here, but seriously, this is just as much of a waste of bandwidth as their posts. Ever consider PMing a moderator or administrator to discuss your opinion?

person should have the warn meter showing for the first 6 months of membership and then be removed if they make it through the probationary period...

Good Point--I feel that a person should be able to Contest the action though if they feel it is unfair, But realistically speaking an A$$ is an A$$ and theres been times that Iv felt Bad for a Noob that gets Blasted simply cuz he's Well ----- A Noob ----We all were at one time,,, weather it was learning to **** standin up @ 2 ( u Girls not included ) or learning the value of a search @ 22. There are no stupid questions only stupid people that Dont question.
Now --If I could only figure out how to post pictures

John-

I'm a long-time veteran (and moderator) on the MR2 board. Trust me, long-time members can be just as offensive and obnoxious as the worst newbie. They have banned members with 5 or more years.

oh i know....i was just stating that as it may help curb the new guys posting age old questions that you can find 40 answers to with a simple search

i think what would really work better is have it on a 6 month probationary period and then it disapears till you have had to be warned about something and then its turned back on for x period of time to keep you behaving

Here is my take on it.

Some kids (examples:uncut, fwd350ztt(same person as uncut), realdeal, snoopz, odin, etc) have nothing better to do than to hang out on internet forums and act like obnoxious children. They are not merely "noobs", for they have no interest in learning or becoming normal members. They contribute nothing but stupidity and/or misinformation. They do not help anyone. They waste resources. They make repetative threads on purpose. They try to instigate E-fights or just waste peoples time. These kids are what are known as TROLLS. They troll around(like fisherman) looking to start pointless flame wars(catch a fish) with what is known as flame bait(a lure). I suspect about half of these children, for whatever reason, can't drive/afford a 350z. That makes them jealous, and regardless of whether that is the case or not, they feel the need to take their frustrations/teenage angst out on the entire community.

Unfortunately, on a public internet forum there is little anyone can do to keep these attention starved degenerates away. We can ban them you say. So they make a new email account and use a proxy to mask their IP (assuming they aren't already assigned a dynamic IP like with dial-up accounts) and they're right back to trolling. Banning them is a good deterrent but it's not totally effective.

So what do I suggest we do? I suggest we stop entertaining these little twirps. So they want to make inane threads/posts? Who cares. Just put them on your ignore list. Maybe we can make an off-topic ignore list thread of all the known trolls, and a place to discuss potential trolls, and a place to redirect unsuspecting fish who might be tempted to bite the bait. (would probably turn into a flame war itself). It would also be funny if the mods could build a global ignore feature into the site, so that the trolls posts only show up for them and nobody else. :evil grin:

One thing is certain, the more we entertain their stupidity the more they will carry on with their childish antics. If everyone pays no attention to them then they will get bored and move elsewhere. This would take a fairly collective effort. I think this is a more mature and better idea than the "braveheart" idea ever was.

If a new person (doesn't make them a newb) comes to this site and sees everyone acting like little children, most reasonable people might keep looking for a less infested website. Don't make the mistake and assume new people don't have anything to offer the community. Look at bill bailey. He's a fairly new member and he's beeing providing pretty good posts from day one. Let's try to keep this place clean and mature... and the little kids will eventually be forced to go home or grow up.

Here is my take on it.
I fully agree with banning people who post useless, repetitive posts.

The simple solution is, if you want to post on somebodies thread. Then always try to help the person and try to answer the question as it was asked, dont try to school, or become a search **** etc etc

If nobody posts to a stupid thread, or answers them, the person will soon give up and stop posting, because he is not getting attention.
For example if a thread is posted "When do you replace your windscreen wipers" Dont post replies like "BAN" or "USE A SEARCH FUNCTION" or "ANOTHER NOOB", this will only entertain the original poster, and irritate others who might believe the thread is a legitimate question.

I can also name people on here who are a little unforgiving, and I feel we could all do with a little more maturity.

ps. To roast and some others, I joined this forum with the best of intentions. I havent had a sports car for 4 years, and wanted to join a community where I could post pictures of my ride and enjoy talking about the 350Z.

I agree w/ just ignoring a thread you might say is useless, but not everyone has the knowledge that someone else may have. I just press on, thread jacking is more irritating to me, cause i may be interested in a certain thread then have to weed through smart *** comments, or completely off the subject garbage.

Also, it's only logical when you start a thread asking for help, (help which you desperately need), don't be a jerkwad to the people taking the time to help you. (you know what I'm talking about.)

I can also name people on here who are a little unforgiving, and I feel we could all do with a little more maturity.
Forgive and forget, right? If you want to stop following me from thread to thread trying to mock me(again, you know what I'm talking about), then you can start talking about maturity, ok?

To roast and some others, I joined this forum with the best of intentions. I havent had a sports car for 4 years, and wanted to join a community where I could post pictures of my ride and enjoy talking about the 350Z.

I agree 100% with NewJerZ.

Also idwin, odin, and roast all make the same good points.

The problem with trolls, however, is that once they are banned, they just re-register under a new name. I am also a moderator on another (unrelated) forum and I realize how frustrating these problems can be.

Although I am certainly not "new" in the sense that I have owned and driven cars for 35+ years, I still consider myself a "newbie" in this forum. I DO use the "search" feature as John@Victory keeps suggesting . . . but many times I cannot locate the info I am looking for.

Is it possible to expand the search feature to include exact phrases, etc?

IMHO it is probably best to just use the "ignore" feature for people that you consider to be totally worthless or a troll. I agree that responding to a troll only makes the situation worse, but I have responded to RealDeal's posts at first b/c I thought he was just a young kid asking questions.

I appreciate this forum, and look forward to getting along with everyone here! If I p*ss anyone off, by all means shoot me a PM over it and we can discuss it as mature individuals.

Thanks,
Joe
