Default Theft Isses w/ the Z

Hey everyone....

I will be getting a 350Z coupe in a few weeks... I live in Vancouver, Canada... downtown... and I am concerned about theft because i will be putting a number of aftermarket parts onto it.... There's a big problem in Vancouver with theft if you park it in your parking lot outside and there is also the same problem if you park it in your underground apartment building(because the underground parking is usually multi-leveled and thieves can sneak in through the gated doors or it may even be an inside job with another tenant in the building...

My main concern is twofold:

1) Expensive rims and tires..... 3-4 ground worth of wheels can be stolen if you have a nice set of wheels. I believe there are specialized lock nuts you can get.. are these effective?

2) If they steal the entire car, i may not get a fair settlement through my insurance company since I will be putting so much money into it... exhaust, headers, wheels, stereo, etc. etc....

Any feedback would be great.....

You'll probably have to check with your insurance provider about your coverage. I know some offer a "modified" insurance. As for the locks you can get them. I haven't used them since I've heard horror stories about them getting stuck. I can't really give you much advice on that.

Well you won't be getting back any money you spent on aftermarket goodies.

I bought some german locking lug nuts for my wheels, so I know they aren't coming off.
I spent a lot of cash for my rims and tires so I wanted high quality locking lug nuts for my wheels.

Just don't park your car in Metrotown, Surrey, or East Van.

he'll be insured by ICBC. i'm not sure if they have additional coverage for 'specialty items' added. even worse, if you make more than 3 claims (regardless of fault) your premium goes up.

just get 3 different sets of wheelocks. i bought one from japan, one from Cali, and one from Canadian Tire.

Wheel locks won't stock a seasoned, determined theif. They can stop a novice, but don't place all your bets on it.

Ha, yeah theres a thing called a nut cracker for wheel locks ( dont ask how i know) but it goes around your wheel lock and is pulled and a very very strong force is applied to your lock, witch splits or shatters the wheel lock, very impressive unit, also a gattor socket can be used, it has lots of teeth that contor to your lock, and then a unit that looks like a bolt out socket that can be dug into your lock and taken off, and like stated if they want your rims, they will be gone, if there pros or semi good, hope this helps, hell it only takes 60 seconds to steal a car LOL

like he said, if they want it bad enough, they will find a way to take it. Just don't go aftermarket head unit in a ZR if you don't wan't more problems.

EDIT: saw coupe, my bad. Best you can do is review your insurance policy carefully. Many will cover up to 5K of installed aftermarket with proof (pics, receipts.) Shop around and get specifics in writing.
