Default ABS brakes in the Z saved my a$$

A lady in an SUV pulls out on to oncoming traffic from a parking lot right in front of me, then stops as she sees me coming...in the middle of the street.

I quickly looked to swerve, but managed to see a car right next to me. I grit my teeth and slam on the brakes...Thank God for them ABS brakes. When it kicked in, the brakes rattled and I manage to stop with a couple of inches to spare.

It's funny how the whole experience just seemed to happen in slow motion.

did u finger her? or anything in terms of expressing anger?
I would have stared at her face as I go back where I would have headed.
(you know, like turning my face to the right or left upto 90~100 degrees)

ABS actually doesn't make you stop faster, it only allows you to turn while skidding. Usually only useful in slippery climates.

Really? I thought it assisted braking without losing control in emergency situations by rapidly tapping the brakes. This prevents wheel lock and decreases stopping distance. Am I wrong?

I'm pretty sure abs helps reduce straight line braking distance a little

Completely wrong. With ABS you NEVER want to tap the brakes. ABS is designed to do this for you. When you are in an emergency situation with ABS you slam the brake to the floor and hold it. The ABS will do the rest and your wheels should not lock up. The ABS is made to not allow your brakes to lock up but instead continue rolling at a much reduced rate.

I think this is what ZedNewbie is saying. By "it taps the brakes repeatedly", it is the ABS.

Yeah I thought that after I wrote it. I initially thought he was saying that he taps the breaks repeatedly.

^^Yep, that's what I meant (ABS automatically taps the brakes for you). I should've worded that more carefully.

What I noticed in this forum is that people will call you out if you're wrong in a heartbeat. You better know what the hell you're talking about 'round here.

Haha, I wasn't trying to call you out I was just trying to jump on it before someone went out there thinking they should be pumping their ABS brakes, which is exactly what not to do. It makes me throw-up in my mouth a little to see wrecked Z's, besides that I can't get an erection for hours afterwards.

And then there is the fact that I'm sitting at work right now scanning the forum with nothing better to do so my responses right now are quick.

Did I what? Finger her? I don't know if that means giving the finger (flipping the bird) in Canada, but it means something else here in the States.

She looked very apologetic afterwards, so I just moved on.

LOL, working the swing shift huh? I definitely don't miss that.

It's cool, like I said I should have worded that more carefully. Especially with people who are less informed make rash judgments based on what they read on this forum.

You are corect.

ABS is a winner and I ask new 350Z drivers to give it a try. On a wet road in straight line, hit the brakes hard. Then move up to a wet road on a long curve. Hit the brakes hard and steer the car. It works. Practice emergency maneuvers. In an emergency you will know what to expect.

Default ABS Works!

ABS has saved my butt a few times. In MD on I495, I270, I70, I95, I695, where there is fast moving traffic then sudden slow down to a stop, ABS definitely helps. I give plenty of room in front for just those ocassions. The problem is people behind me. People just want to ride your a$$. I know it's fun with the girl/wife, but total strangers?! Hmmm...

Back on topic - Glad you and the Z came out safe. Know thy car and look around for just about everyone. Too many clueless people on the roads.
