I got Blizz-x tires and thought I'd be good for winter...

However driving on the onramp to a highway at 30Km/h I spun out and landed in a ditch.

What are my options? Get chains on my tires? How can I tell if the thread on my tires are worn out?

 

blizzaks are about the best winter tire you can get....i got through a whole winter with them with no problems. Just drive very slow and take lots of time to stop

 

Not enough clearance for snow chains. Plus they beat the hell out of the car. Worn tires? Look for tread wear indicators.

 

Blizzaks wear very quickly. 10,000 miles? The tread is half that of most winter tires. I rock Nokian RSI's. However, my guess is that you accelerated at the wrong time. Easy movements!

 

Im Rocking my Wintersport M3's and so far no problems with them at all.

 

Need more info. What were the weather conditions? Most highway ramps are not the same, so its hard to gauge how fast is safe for an unknown ramp.

 

i have about 10k on my blizzaks now and they really don't even look like they lost any tread....they are still VERY meaty

 

He actually posted this for me. Ok, the tires have about 28,000mi on them and were driven year-round. Yea, I know. What do you guys think though? Time to buy new ones? Or if I keep these, can I insert little metal studs into them or whatever you call those things?

 

...28,000 on Blizzaks may be a record. Maybe you can use them in as slicks for the drag strip next summer?

 

The only thing more important than the tires is the driver. My guess is you made sometype of mistake. Only do one thing at a time whether it is throotle, braking, or turning. Always coast across bridges and be as smooth as possible with all your imputs.

Living in Montana I've been caught in some nasty situations with my Z. All I can say is chill out and drive whatever speed it will let you. Don't feel embarassed to drive slow. My record is 5MPH on the interstate. I've been sideways at 10 heading for a concrete road block on a bank curve THEY ARE SO STEEP at 10 mph. Just be careful the car in my opinion is worthless in the winter. Although it handles well.

Off ramps as far as i know are illegal to slow down before exiting but 90% of the time they are the slipperist so come to a stop.

This advice can't apply to densly populated areas if you're in that situation get out fast and park it have a friend come pick u up or both you and the car.

 

LOL im in North Carolina so i dont have to worry about this problem that much. But we had 1/2 inch snowfall here in the Traingle a couple years ago that rendered my Z completely useless. Snow tires dont do much for this car. I now have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 5.2 V8 for my "beater"...bring on the snow!!

Honestly, if i lived up north, i would not buy this car if couldnt afford to have a beater 4x4 as well. Thats just me though.

 

North Carolina = 1 Ice storm a year that melts off before morning rush hour. I love it too, and would go there if they would pay me!

I'm leaving the summer tires on and just refusing to go in to the office if it snows. If it starts at work I'll call my wife to pick me up...

This car has no business in icy/snowy conditions.

 

Canada + Winter = 4 Wheel Drive or Front Wheel Drive

 

i had to take the Z through a little ice storm awhile back. Moved in during the day and I was at work. It was bad driving home but I just told my self to double the time and distance of everything I did. I would start braking gently over twice as far as usual. And yeah just go slow. when I drove a mustang in the rain with drag radials I nearly lost it at 30mph on the freeway. I'm an expert of dealing with ****ty weather.

You mean 28,000KM? I went through a set of Blizzaks in 11,000MI.

 

Not necessary in Toronto... It would be nice, but not necessary.
