Default Downshifting vs. Neutral

Is it better to downshift while preparing to stop or putting the car in neutral and just brake? (just wanted people's opinions)

Does anyone else have trouble going into 4th gear. Either from 3-->4 or 5-->4? (Maybe I just need to get used to the gear pattern. I've only had the car a month)

wrong forum buddy. Try the engine/drivetrain or 350z forums.

Neither. Use the transmission and brakes for control.

if u know u are going to make a complete stop, and u dont need to accelerate anymore.. pop in neutral when u are at 1k rpm, use brake to assist urself to stop. but if u need to use the gas or u might not completely stop at the stopping point, then keep in gear. i keep myself in gear till my tach hits 1k rpm... then i pop my shifting into nuetral (no clutch usage)

there's no wrong way...

how is it hard to get in 4th?... u pull down.... the Z **** centers its center right in the middle... u push up... it will go in 3rd... u pull down it goes in 4th. so when u down shift from 5th->4th.... just pull straight down..... when u pop in neutral, it centers itself and just pull down from there and ull be in 4th.

I put it in neutral and when I'm ready to accelerate or maintain speed I put it in the right gear and go. If I'm driving for fun I'll downshift and revmatch to the best of my ability.

I generally cruise in the tallest gear acceptable for my speed.... when it comes time to slow down or stop I will down shift to a lower gear... that way I can engine brake longer/stronger, not lug the engine or coast excessively in neutral, and be prepared to accelerate if need be.

Coasting around in neutral is pretty noob unless you're just finishing off a stop.

As a general rule if you're in neutral you have no control. Unless you are the only one on the road you never know when you may have to move and move quickly. I stay in gear until I've stopped, I use the clutch to disengage just before stopping. The only time I'm in neutral is if I'm sitting at a dead stop for more than a minute or so.

Neutral is supposed to be used only when stopped.

You have to downshift going through every gear you went through when you were accelerating, putting the car into first right as you come to a complete stop.

At this point, you can put the car in neutral if you wish.

For more ability to control the car, I leave in whatever gear I was in, apply brake, shift to neutral whn stopped. using the engine to slow down the car is a BAD BAD BAD idea. New brake pads are relatively cheap compared to a new engine.

Oh and yeah, if you ever get to a situation where you engine dies and your car is in a dangerous spot (in a turn for instance) and no-one can help you push the car, you can use this technique to move a couple of meters. It's a last resort though...
