Not sure what this groups understanding is of Mass Air Flow sensors, but it's clearly wrong.

This would be the corect explanantion. If you make a mod like exhaust or cold air, the Mass Air Flow sensor sees the increase in airflow and adds fuel as needed. (that's why it there!) Yes it will keep the same air fuel ratios, but it will only retard the timing if it sees detonation. The net result will be a HP increase over stock. We have seen this with many parts already. We have also seen poorly designed parts lose power over stock.

For example, if you want to mod a Honda (which don't use MAS) they usually run lean as a result because the same fuel/timing map is being used. Don't ask me how I know...I owned too many Hondas in my lifetime. This is one of the reasons Hondas run so rich from the factory. MAS are a much more sophisticated than having fixed ECU programs.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

Mr 350Z, without giving it away, how likely is it that we will see a street legal NISMO intake?
