if you are remotely thinking about putting 89 in your Z, how can you afford to have one?

What can be used? Even 87 octane. What should be used? Nothing less than 91. Leave lesser octane for emergencies only; i.e. when 91+ is unavailable and driving the car is completely unavoidable. Even in that case, the manual recommends filling up with 91+ ASAP.

Some places have 93... some places have 91... a lot of it depends on the local conditions that warrant premium octane needs... gas blends are a regional and seasonal type of thing... due to the elevation where I live... we only need 91.

The car will run on regular. It will not blow up, but it's always a good idea to stick with the manufacturers suggestions. Just like you can run synthetic oil even though the manual recommends dino.

I've never used anything but premium. It was something factored in before buying the car.

Look at it this way: manufacturers also recommend certain tire psi depending on the load. We all know we could, theoretically, get away with a lower psi for a time should we need to for any reason, but we know that such an action would most likely lead to consequences. Otherwise they would have no reason for such a recommendation in the first place. I'd do the same with the octane; you know it will run, but is it worth it? Probably not.

I don't understand why people always ask about this. Look, people, you bought a $30K car. If you can't afford the extra $0.10, maybe it's time to trade the car in for something a little more "sensible".

You're assuming that he is trying to save money. Maybe he's just wondering if he was stranded w/ only 89 and he had a date w/ Brooke Burke on the other side of town in 5min. If this was the case, I'd carry the Z on my back as I ran really really fast. If this isn't the case then he's a cheap azz and should be driving a pos hyundai.

I NEVER put anything less than 93 in the Z and the only time I;d do otherwise is if I had NO OTHER CHOICE.

Just make it run slower, the more octane you have past the what is actually needed will make you car slower. I pick up my car tomorrow but i will soon figure out what gas to run in it. My SVT Focus takes 91 but at the altitude of Las Vegas i run 89 in it and its a night and day difference in power. Use the lowers octane possible with pinging.

So I was wondered if I had a long road trip say down the 5 freeway (those of us in CA, know the 5 is a straight shot for hundreds of miles between LA and SF). On something like that, would 89 octane be okay? Or am I risking ruining my engine.
WTF? 89 Octane in a Z? Sell your car immediately
