Same weight basically.

The BMW SMG trans isn't a auto. Don't get it twisted with tiptronic. This is a manual tranny that is hydraulically shifted by a actuator. You can buy a few parts to make it into a 6spd if you wanted to.

The SMGII transmission isn't a auto lets make it very very clear.

Stick. I like to be involved when I'm driving. My left foot would get bored.

I voted stick and for one reason only. You get to ask your chick if she know's how to drive stick and the rest is history

What happens is you ask her "Can you drive with SMG paddles?" She's going to look at you like you're an idiot.

I drive a SMG M3, and my gf has a 6sp 350 vert.

M3 - its fun, smooth, and shifts really fast

350z - i seem to be more connected to this car, maybe because of all the clutch /gas pedal work.

M is my DD, so i wanted something that i could drive easily, and when i upgrade to a SC and race clutch i wont kill my left foot

Call me old school, but down/up shifting with feet and hands while cornering is one of the best driving experiences IMO. Stick all the way, but very good points made for the SMG, the only one I ever drove was a BMW and it wasn't mine so I didn't get to fool around to much, so maybe my opinion isn't worth squat.

Cheers

Kevin

it would really depend for me. if it was a car that i was gonna be racing at the track every week i'd probably go smg because it faster than conventional manual around a track. for a street car it would be stick all the way because its so much fun

That might be true if you live in states, in my country, 95% of cars are stick and almost all 17s are able to drive stick, heck, I drove stick when I was 12 (equal to 8th-9th grade in US)

Could be the reason why BMW is going that way on the M3 model.

SMG haters? Thats why most ferraris come with paddle shifting and their own type of SMG right? Same thing with most F1, Indy, and all advanced forms of racing.

The truth is, the only reason I picked SMG is because like I said before if its a M3 I pick SMG because that car has class and is sophisticated. The Z however, I prefer my 6spd over SMG anyday, mainly because it's raw, more fun to mess around with, and just plain JDM. lol

Wouldnt it be great if somehow they could incorporate a clutch with an smg setup. So the clutch could be there when you needed it. Like launching or other situations. I think F1 cars are set up this way, correct me if im wrong.

If it's a classy and luxury sports car I would prefer SMG. If its raw and sports car like, I prefer 6spd.

Older F1 cars had clutches, but new ones are all sequentials (no pedal clutch).
