Lot of good valid points here, but still in all. You can't classify all sales consultants together. All dealerships are different, and all people are different. My dealership screens people, and also sends them to training on not only sales in general, but how we do buisness here. We have 10 people and half of them have been here for 10 years +, couple more of us(me included) 2 years or so, the rest are new. There is a dealer across the river that really does shady buisness. They charge over msrp and have extra fees for stuff that does not exist. They also hire and fire 5 salespeople a month. They hire the type of people that will lie to you when you call, and when you are there. I guess it all depends on what dealership you visit. Although I know about the products i sell, and a lot about my competition, I would never lie to a customer. If i don't know the towing capacity, or HP or whatever, I will tell them I am nost sure, but when we go inside I will find that out for you. I apologize but I can't recall it right now, and move on. That dealer telling you that there is no difference between the 2 is not a good dealer to do buisness with, because he lied. There are and always will be a negative connotation with a car salesman, but when you get to know the customer, and answer them truthfully, and treat them right, they will see that you are a nice person and you have proved them wrong, and more than likely buy a vehicle from you.

True
My mom went in to buy her new acura by herself and two day's later i went back with her. For like an hour all i heard was her telling me "he didn't say that yesterday" They will jack a women for some reason. Maybe they should learn that women are just as smart as men. my mom asked him would he lie to his mother just to sell her a car. I thought that guy was going to start crying after that.

Having the self control to walk away is the key to any deal. Reguardless of what the salesman says or does, if the terms of the deal are not what you can accept, walk away.

Ok so i need to work on #1 Am polite and nce untill you lie to me
-2 Very knowledgable unfortunatly also very arogant -4 Will walk away, unless he tries to fight me.

If you make me an unrealistic, below invoice offer, or want a ridiculous amount for your trade in, I won't try to stop you. 99% of the people that think you have to leave, or attempt it to get the best deal. That is a misconception. I have had many people do that when I was already 200 over invoice, left, called an hour later after going to another dealership and seeing my price/service was better. Sometimes the vehicle sells and they even settle for something different, or sometimes more expensive. If people would just come in and be courteous, and when it is time to negotiate the price, just state that you would like to pay 200 over invoice, they would get a lot further. A good salesman would get that commitment in writing, take it to the desk, and come back with a deal. Managers love commitments. Lets them know what they have to do to sell a car.

No thanks. I am quite happy being a dude.
But seriously, I know exactly what you mean. Everytime my sister goes car shopping she takes me along. You almost have to take a male with you to avoid a majority of the BS.

I agree with you.
I am not unrealistic and i don't try to give rediculous offers.
I just don't like being lied to. Plain and simple if you lie then there is NO respect and that's when i become an A$$hole, cause in the end it's my money.

I don't expect a salesperson to be a walking encyclopedia about every vehicle, but i do expect him to have some general knowledge. On the other have, I have done my homework. If I know more than the salesperson, so be it. No point in demonstrating my superior knowledge, or testing the salesperson. This is not a smart contest. I

Agree. And a salesperson is not going to win your favor by regurgitating specs or correcting the buyer. No one likes a know-it-all.

going back to what ya'll were talking about on the first page or two.... innacurate info is always great for a laugh, so i don't mind when they get it wrong as long as I already know about the car, which i usually do.. for example, when I bought my Z it was between this and the evo 8.. When I was driving the evo, he told me it was a twin turbo, and when I was driving the Z he told me it was front wheel drive, haha! On the other hand though i did get duped with bad info once when i bought my land rover before the z.. the guy told me it would take regular gas (which i believed considering they use them in africa on safari trips where i doubt 91 is available), and being stupid i didnt think anything of it until the first time i had to fill up and popped the door to see the warning "91 octane only" - errrr......

... as for being a chick trying to buy a car, at least u get to test drive anything u want without them giving u a hard time! - assuming ur hot

Well they make money from parts dept, service and used cars.
That brings up a Good point. The Service Department is the "3rd Rail" of any dealership and can make or break a deal.

I suggest stopping by the service department first, before even seeing a salesperson and observing the attitude of the workers and the satisfaction level of the customers. I would also speak with them about something trivial, like basic maintenance or tire service and see where their prices are and how they react.

Ummm why wait for all the BS that is coming to you at lightspeed? Forget the checklist, just interupt the bastard and give him the information you spent your precious time researching and you will give him a commission worthy of him saving his time and effort with senseless jibberish.

I was out looking for an s2k for my brother and this guy tries to sell me one that was used for 2k miles higher than MSRP when there were 4 other brand new s2ks in the parking lot at MSRP.

It's true that most sales people don't know jack about the cars they sell.

The dealership is in the business of making money. To make the most money, you have to buy low and sell high. That means giving you low value for your trade in so they can make a profit on it when they resell it, and mark the new car up so they can get a considerable amount over what they paid for it.

The dealers have the "slight" advantage, and they know how to exploit that advantage. They do it multiple times a day and the model has worked forever, so they're pretty good at it.
Hmmm... caveat emptor

dealerships mark up used cars anywhere from $2,000 -$7,000 not even based on condition just on demand and popularity, sometimes just because they can! so your underpriced trade in becomes someone elses overpriced
DEAL!

This is so true.. I went by the local stealership today to pick up a part I needed and decided to ask a sales guy if they had any 07s. So he says yes and pointed to an 06 vert and said yea right there. Told him no that is an old one and only the 07 touring models have the new motor. Turned around and walked out shaking my head.

I shoped around and I bough 06 base at 29k out of door on 3/31/06. it was even as sticker price.
