Default Shift Light - 8,000rpm?

As weird as it sounds, I just found out today it goes up to 8,000, yet redline is 6,600... hmm.. Does Nissan/Nismo know something we don't yet?

you mean you can change the shift light to 8000 rpm?

Or that you took the car up to 8000 rpm?

Either way, I doubt the VQ engine can go up that high, it's just not built for it.

Also the power curve showed a definate drop before 6000, taking it beyond won't really help you in the end.

I know I'm repeating things you already know, but just speaking for arguement sake.

I have had mine set to 8000 since the day I bought it before I drove out of the dealership.

No annoying blinking red light for me.

Regards,
Kevin

Basically the reason it can go up that high is why kakey has it set there so you can redline your Z(6600) with out the shift lite ever coming on. Unless they decide to make a chip that can go past redline.

yeah... for about 2000 miles before the boost and RPMs blow it up.

that light cant be an indicator of much. 6600 or 8000, made no difference to nissan, if they made it 10000, would you expect that? they just had to end it somewhere, rather than 6600, they chose 8000, means nothing.

I'm pretty sure Nissan used the 8000 set for those who didn't want that little red light flashing at them at all. Just my $.02

Plus, it could be easier for them to program it that way, so if they do come out with a high revving Honda-esque engine in the future, they dont have to change anything with the program.....though I think a more logical explination is to not have it blink anywhere in the rev range if you dont want it to.

I personally call that a blunder on nissans part. the tiptronic trannys are supposed to not allow you to do something harmful to the car. thats the appeal of them. if you had blown your engine, would they blame you? if it was done in a regular manual, they would, but will they in an auto?

At what RPM does the limiter step in? 6800? 6900?

Actually, I do believe it would still be considered his fault. I'm pretty sure you can downshift into a redline zoned. You're saying that suppose I was going 45, and was in second, and accidently downshifted, the car wouldn't let me downshift? I doubt that...

yeah of course a manual would let you blow the engine, and if you brought you car in from that, they would laugh and hand you the bill.

but what if it was the same thing except an automatic, would they still make you pay.

In my CL-S with sportshift it wouldnt let you downshift after a certain speed in each gear. If any of you have unhooked the ground from the battery and then hook it back up and turn your car on, what does the shift light default to? I thought it was 6600rpm.

Many performance "tipTronic" trannys allow you to destroy the engine to your hearts content.

Ferrari, porsche, etc, do not have limits, that is they will let you select an improper gear, even if it would be harmful.

This was actually an issue on the Ferrari tranny as many new users were not aware of this, and were blowing their engines, as they shifted to 2nd gear by mistake. (was in one of the magazines, dont remember which--maybe Putz and Driver.)

My GF has a Hyndai Sante Fe, which has a sport mode auto tranny, but it will not allow you to **** into an improper gear, and it is annoying as hell! (great car by the way, believe it or not)

Eric
