Question tire size? speed bumps?

So what's the difference between 17 and 18 inch tires? What is the physics of why one is better than another? Is it harder on a car to have 18s? Which is better in snow?

Also, have any of you had problems with speed bumps? I've never had a car so low to the ground.

17 and 18" actually refers to the size of the wheel you are installing the tire onto. Tires are measured as follows:
275 (width) x 35 (sidewall) x 19 (size of wheel).

The lower the sidewall number the smaller the sidewall. As sidewall gets smaller they tend to get stiffer.

I've never had any problems with speed bumps (I have a Performance with the 18's). Just be careful when you're pulling up near a curb! Learn what it looks like from the driver's seat so that you don't scrape the front end up. Remember, the Z is shorter and narrower than most cars anyway. You can stop 2 feet from a curb to be safe and it still fits well within the parking space.

yup, 17s and 18s have the same overall tire size.

well... not exactly. first off, the ride should be smoother in the 17s, larger sidewall means they tire can take more of the bumps in the road, common misconception is that the suspension is there to give you a smooth ride, that is not true, suspension is there so the tire stays on the road, the reason we use rubber air filled tread is for a smooth ride, same goes for bicycles that have no suspension.

17s on the Z are also 225 and 235, as some one before said, this is the tires width, on the 18s they are 225 and 245, this indicates that if anything 17s should be better at snow because the key to good snow use is thin tires to cut through down to the pavement, but 10mm difference isnt really enough to make either drivable.

then performance, 17s are lighter, and put the weight closer to the center, important for rotational inertia/performance.

yes, 17" rims are in every measurable way better than 18s, or 19, or 20s. and on the flip side, 16 are better than 17, 15 better than 16.

but theres one aspect that cant be measured.... its the same reason that I bought new tires for my car and yet they are 18" rims with 275 tread. science cant quantify everything.
