Switching to neutral at stoplights was a hard habit for me to learn. So used to keeping in gear from my days of truck driving.

How are you screwed? If you know you are coasting and you see a bus in front of you, one with common sense would apply brakes sufficient enough to stop prior to hitting the bus. Coasting at 750rpm (idle) will always save you more gas than engine braking, IMO.

What if hitting the brakes is not what the situation calls for? What if you have to yank the steering wheel instead of hitting the brakes? It's much easier to lose control over a car in neutral than a car in gear. It's pretty common knowledge to anyone who has any high performance driving ability.

As for saving fuel, read the thread. You are wrong.

I was in gear at 2500 RPM and turned the car off...same noise as if it was on. Then, you just turn the key to ACC (not to actually *turn* it on as if it were parked in a garage..) and you notice no difference what so ever turning it on. I guess that proves the no gas consumption while coasting in gear..
