I have never needed one in 40 years, doubt if I will need one now. Kids put them on the A pillar for everyone to see.

If you have a turbo setup it's a good idea. I had a friend with a turbo civic who had a leak in the oil return which eventually built up and started a fire (or so he says). The whole car burned down before he could run into the walgreens and grab one.

Yes, since fire extinguishers have to be pointed at the base of the flame to quell it and in case of engine fires, that is often by the undercarriage, out of sight.

Halon?

Are the small ones sufficient?

Where have you mounted it? Pics?

Have you ever needed it for any reason?
I don't have one and don't plan to buy one.

I've always thought about buying one and I intend to when I have my turbo system reinstalled.

gross generalizations for the loss.

Further, this is a very interesting topic. I can see why if you have heavy engine mods it would obviously be a good idea. I suppose at some points, gawd only knows what could go wrong.

However, perhaps even stock Zs could use them as well. True, a fire is unlikely from an accident but I could only imagine how sickening it would be to need one and not have one.

Yes.

It is not for _my_ car catching on fire. It's so that when a fire starts somewhere nearby I'll have one handy. It is just amazing how many people don't keep fire extinguishers around.

I have a small one that I keep behind the drivers seat, along with a first aid kit and roadside emergency kit. Hopefully, I won't ever have to use any of that.

Well, not explode -- but when I was in undergrad, a van caught on fire in front of my frat house. After like 15 minutes (don't know why the emory fire department took forever to get there), the van all of a sudden put out this huge fireball. It singed the trees above and melted the bumpers of the cars beside it.

Not quite hollywood, but it was pretty damn crazy anyway.

Heh. Just got home. A car in the parking lot (MR2) suddenly just caught flames and burned pretty fast. Weird part was no one was around the car when we noticed it.

So any recomendations?

I love my car, but if my car happens to start a bon fire that I can't stop from using my stomping with my shoes, I'll let it burn to the ground. No need to risk my life or harm myself from being "Ladder 49". Plus, when it's a bon fire, anything that is close to the fire is ruin by either fire or water/foam damage.

I can understand helping others with an extingisher, but no need to use it on mine. I felt violated when my other cars were broken into. If my car was on fire (engine) and got it rebuilt, it wouldn't feel the same.

Did the fire burn inside the van first? Perhaps it was a gust of oxygen-rich air when it finally escaped and that caused the fireball. Watch mythbusters, when they bust myths about cigarette lighters.

I don't carry a fire extinguisher, but I should with all the Fords on the road. :P Of all the cars I've ever witnessed that were lost to fire (either internally combusted or arsen) all of them were Fords.
