Default Scary stuff...tranny problem?

I was on the highway. Nobody around so I punched it

I went all the way in 4th and tried to shift it really quick to 5th. What I ended up doing was pushing the shifter down and away instead of just away. It wound up going in the notch thingie for reverse! Scared the crap out of me! Didn't let out the clutch obviously but is the tranny supposed to do that? The Firebird I used to have had a lock mechanism where you couldn't shift in reverse when going 5mph+ or whatever.

Has anyone had this happen to them?

I guess I just have to be more careful when making the 4-5th shift...

4th to 5th... thats away from you, but reverse is towards you.. so you just went over, not actually into the gear.

judging by how you have to push down on the shifter to go over, Id say your bein a little rough on the stick, you dont need to be pushing anything that hard to get it to go. certainly not hard enough that the shifter goes down.

I know I wasn't actually in reverse but what would have happened if I actually let the clutch out? Is that still neutral?

Yeah, I was being a little rough on it. The road was empty but there was a turn about a mile down. I wanted to go as fast as I could until I had to shut down to make the turn. Hence the quick, hard shifting...

yes thats still nuetral, it doesnt hit reverse till you pull back on it. I think thats part of the arguement about reverse on the left or the right, you have to push towards it for 5th, or pull towards it for 2nd. I prefer our way I think.
